Job Success Is Your Responsibility  Objectives  Explain the relationship between your attitude, future job satisfaction & career success  Describe the procedures for beginning a new job & list several of the employer’s expectations  Describe a suitable appearance for a job & explain the importance of being present & punctual  Explain the purpose of a company’s policies & procedures

Attitude Makes A Difference  The attitude you bring to your job will influence your feelings of job satisfaction & your career succes  Attitude is the way you think about things and act towards others  The most important factor in job success is positive attitude  Positive Attitude is showing interest and enthusiasm about something. Chapter 9.1

Attitude Makes A Difference  Ways to show a Positive Attitude  View world as a friendly place  Be accepting to Others  Take responsibility for you decisions  Be honest in expressing thoughts & opinions  Control your feelings  Be open to suggestions for improvement without being angry Chapter 9.1

Attitude Makes A Difference  Negative Attitude is when you view a job or something as drudgery or as a responsibility that must be fulfilled.  A Negative Attitude is displayed when someone  Complains or uses sarcasm  Is critical and blames others for their problems  Are careless at work or has poor work habits  Shows indifference to the needs of other people Chapter 9.1

Attitude Makes A Difference  How Attitudes Are Formed  Attitudes are learned in early childhood from parents, siblings, relatives and friends  When you are assigned chores you are learning values and responsibility  Media such as magazines and tv influence your attitudes & opinions as you get older.  What positive attitudes do you learn from media? Beginning A New Job  On the Job – Your Expectations  Your job (aside from tasks) is to learn & perform the duties you were hired to perform at or above the expectations of your employer  Learn the protocol & etiquette of the organization  Protocol means rules or expectations  Etiquette means manners Chapter 9.2

Beginning A New Job  On the Job – Your Expectations  Full Potential is your highest level of productivity  You will also have a Probationary Period which is a period of time at the start of your employment when you prove your ability to perform the job Chapter 9.2

Beginning A New Job  On the Job – Stress of the 1 st Week  Stress is unavoidable, especially the first few weeks on the job  Stress is emotional tension  The more you learn at work the less stressed you will be  Job Orientation (activities & meetings to acquaint you with the company or organization) will also relieve stress. Laying Groundwork for Career Success  Image Consultants are people who help others project a desired image  Before you start your new job take an inventory of your wardrobe and make a list of possible clothing items you may need. Chapter 9.3

Laying Groundwork for Career Success  Being There: Attendance  Attendance & Punctuality are a big part of preparing for career success. (Your teachers expect this because they know your bosses will too!)  Your absence could affect other workers’ ability to proceed with their jobs. They may be required to perform your assigned task in order to complete a task. Chapter 9.3

Laying Groundwork for Career Success  Being There: Attendance  Legitimate Absence is one that occurs when an employee must miss work for an acceptable reason.  Let your employer know as soon as possible if you will be absent! Chapter 9.3

Laying Groundwork for Career Success  Being There: Punctuality  Your employer will expect you to be ready to work at starting time and stay until quitting time.  You should take no more thank the allotted time for lunch or breaks. Breaks are typically minutes.  Scheduled breaks – rest periods provided by employer to take a time out (used to socialize, eat, etc) Chapter 9.3

Laying Groundwork for Career Success  Being There: Punctuality  If getting to school is tough now, imagine working longer (full-time) with less breaks or friends to talk to and higher expectations…. It will help to: Get enough sleepBuy a lighted alarm clock Pick out clothes night before Keep keys near purse/wallet Put lunch together night beforeTime yourself Read newspaper at lunch or in p.m. Chapter 9.3

Laying Groundwork for Career Success  Being There: Punctuality  Policies & Procedures are a set of rules established by your organization/employer to meet their unique needs, purpose & management system.  Policies provide a sense of order and eliminate confusion. They can also offer protection if things go wrong. Chapter 9.3

Laying Groundwork for Career Success  Being There: Punctuality  Much of your job success will depend on how well you follow the policies of your employer.  Failure to follow the policies could result in termination of your employment!! Chapter 9.3
