SURREALISM: An art movement influenced by the theories of the pioneer of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. The images found in surrealist works are as confusing and startling as those of dreams. Surrealist works can have a realistic, irrational style, precisely describing dreamlike fantasies, or, it could have a more abstract style. Surrealism aims to eliminate conscious control in order to express the workings of the unconscious mind.

The upper area of the painting, with the halo and brown clouds resembles photographs of atomic explosions. The female face, with its tender expression and thin halo, is recognisable as the face of a Madonna by Raphael. Dalí was a great admirer of Old Master paintings. The skull section in this work is based upon the inside of the dome of the Pantheon building in Rome.
