Seminar Agenda Icebreaker – How did you spend your holiday? Equilibrium and the Human Body Second Cousin Tilly and Menopause Aging Male Syndrome Unit 6 Project Preview Unit 5 Project Review Questions & Answers

Ice Breaker! Tell us about your holiday!

Equilibrium & the Human Body

Equilibrium: a state of balance or equality between opposing forces When a new condition is introduced into the system, an adjustment may be necessary for the system to come to equilibrium Homeostasis: the ability of the organism’s body to seek and maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability within its internal environment

Equilibrium & the Human Body “It cannot but happen† that those will survive whose functions happen to be most nearly in equilibrium with the modified aggregate of external forces.† This survival of the fittest implies multiplication of the fittest.” -Herbert Spencer (English Philosopher)

Equilibrium & the Human Body What are some examples of the human body achieving homeostasis?

Cousin Tilly & Menopause What is menopause?

Cousin Tilly & Menopause What treatments exist for menopause? Why do we “treat” it anyway?

Cousin Tilly & Menopause How safe and effective are these treatments?

Cousin Tilly & Menopause What are the drawbacks to these treatments?

Cousin Tilly & Menopause If Tilly has been a smoker all her life, how might this alter her transition through menopause?

Cousin Tilly & Menopause Why are hot flashes rare among Japanese women?

Aging Male Syndrome Myth or reality? What is Aging Male Syndrome?

Unit 6 Project Preview We live in a world where geographic boundaries cease to exist when it comes to goods, services, and even food. We live in an age and society where everything and anything is available for consumption year-round at your local grocery store. Coffee from beans imported from Columbia, Sugar from India Steaks from Argentina This global market comes with potentially major ecological and economic impacts (both positive and negative). How much fuel was spent transporting these products across the ocean? Were any pesticides used? If so, was it done in a sustainable fashion? Were forests cleared to make room for grazing herds or larger agricultural fields? What were the wages for the local workers and what are their alternative sources of income?

Unit 6 Project Preview Answer the following in a 1,000 word paper: List all of the components of two of your meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). List each component’s country of origin. List where you purchased the products from. Consider the chain of events that took the product to get from the farm/laboratory to your table. What are some of the benefits of a global market and why? List at least 2 benefits, weighing any short-term and long-term impacts. What are some of the impacts of this global market and why? Considering both short-term and long-term impacts, provide at least 2 negative impacts. Consider the phrase “Think Globally, Act Locally.” What does it mean to you? Has your research on the global market changed the way you will choose goods in the future? Why or why not?

Unit 6 Project Preview 1,000 word minimum requirement Use APA formatting Cite any resources that are used in your project No more than 10% of the paper should be quoted material Be sure to provide all of the information / answer all questions required in the assignment! Make a connection between each question Review the grading rubric in the syllabus

Unit 5 Project Review Conduct a virtual lab! Note – you need to have Java installed on your computer to conduct this experiment. Click on the Demonstration window Be patient! This might take a while to load as you go through the lab. Follow the directions within the lab and record your observations for each step (be thorough and specific).

Unit 5 Project Review Questions to Answer How does lowering temperature change the speed at which molecules move? How would adding more molecules affect the motion inside the chambers? Explain the effect temperature appears to have on the equilibrium of mixing. Compare what would happen if you put a spoonful of honey into a cup of 200°F tea vs. an identical cup filled with 45°F tea. If you opened up a container of stinky Limburger cheese at 1 end of an empty large outdoor parking lot with a group of shoppers about 50’ away, would you be able to enjoy eating your snack longer without offending the shoppers in the summer or winter?

Unit 5 Project Review No specific format is necessary, but it should be well written, clear, and error free. Cite any resources that are used in your project. Take good notes when conducting your experiments! Be sure to provide all of the information / answer all questions required in the assignment!
