FILM REVIEW PIRATES 3 So why do we like the Pirates so much? I believe that Michael Wilmington of the Chicago Tribune is right when he says, “What we love about pirate movies and myths, of course, is their mix of adventure, freedom and naughtiness.” And I believe Brian Lowry of Variety is correct in his observation, that “the two ‘Pirates’ sequels feel less like movies than a shared event -- much like a concert where the audience sits patiently through lesser known numbers to hear the band belt out favorite tunes.” Yes, indeed, Pirates is a shared event that celebrates the adventure (and need) for freedom in all of its glory and, yes, in all of its naughtiness! It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, “Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err. It passes my comprehension how human beings, be they ever so experienced and able, can delight in depriving other human beings of that precious right.” ‘Pirates’ is a cultural celebration of the very basic human need for freedom which exists in every human heart!
