8 The ELA pilot consists of four key elements 4 Grand Division meetings with peers, to be attended by a 2-5 person district-level ELA pilot team, to give and receive feedback on implementation efforts. (Additional, elective meetings on specific topics may be offered throughout the year.) Administration of 4 writing assessments per grade in the 3-12 band. These assessments will increase the frequency of writing to sources and give teachers information about student readiness. Teacher completion of a set of online courses with summation activities that will require teachers to demonstrate command of the key instructional shifts and implications. Periodic feedback to the Department through surveys and focus groups to inform efforts toward full implementation in

10 The move to Common Core State Standards in ELA requires three key instructional shifts 1.Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction 2.Reading,writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational 3.Regular practice with complex text and its academic language

12 Common Core changes to the Writing Assessment 1) Changes to the Writing Assessment: 2) Pilot districts will administer the official Writing Assessment prompt plus three released items according to the following grade bands: –5 th grade prompt: 4-6 –8 th grade prompt: 7-9 –11 th grade prompt: –A solution for 3 rd still needs to be worked out. 3) After September field test, released items along with scoring guides and anchor papers will be posted on the TDOE website. Teachers will do scoring (more details on this at next pilot meeting). 4) Timing: districts may decide when to administer the released items. We suggest the following windows: October, December, February (official administration for grade 5, 8, and 11 is Feb. 4-8), March.
