What is CODATA? CODATA, the “Committee on Data for Science and Technology”, is an independent interdisciplinary Scientific Committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU) established 40 years ago.

CODATA in Context? ICSU’s Data Committee ICSU Union representatives Member countries

Who is involved ? ~20 member countries Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Finland, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States. 16 International Scientific Unions Astronomical Union (IAU), Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), Geographical Union (IGU), Crystallography (IUCr), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), Geological Sciences (IUGS), Psychological Science (IUPsyS), Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB), Nutritional Sciences (IUNS), Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR), Immunological Societies (IUIS), Microbiological Societies (IUMS), Soil Science (IUSS), Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) 3 co-opted Scientific Organizations International Council of Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) World Data System Scientific Committee (WDS SC) 13 supporting organizations

CODATA Objectives Improvement of the quality and accessibility of data, and the methods by which data are acquired, managed, analyzed and evaluated. Facilitation of international cooperation among those collecting, organizing and using data. Promotion of an increased awareness in the scientific community of the importance of these activities. Data access and intellectual property issues. Particular emphasis on developing countries.

CODATA Conference Taipei Theme: “Open Data and Information for a Changing Planet” Highlights: 4 days 200 oral sessions 20 poster presentations six keynote addresses five high-level discussion sessions Early career scientists activities

Next CODATA Conference CODATA International conferences are held every 2 years. Discussions on dates and locations are underway for the 2014 conference in New Delhi India. The 2014 conference may be held jointly with the World Data System.

Related Int. Initiatives: World Data System (WDS) CODATA works closely with WDS. WDS created at the ICSU 29th General Assembly based on the 50- year legacy of the ICSU World Data Centres (WDCs). Objectives: –Transition from existing stand-alone data centres/services to a common, globally interoperable, distributed data system. –Foster disciplinary and multidisciplinary applications for the benefit of the international scientific community. –Develop a broader disciplinary and geographic base and become a world-wide ’community of excellence' for data stewardship and delivery. WDS has 49 Member organizations in Oct

CODATA Initiatives: Nanomaterials Nanomaterials: Natural, incidental or manufactured material containing particles, in an unbound state or as an aggregate or as an agglomerate, and where most of the particles have external dimensions in the size range 1– 100 nm. CODATA is working with working the Centre For BioNano Interactions (CBNI) School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology preparing a funding application focussed on “FutureNanoNeeds : The Description of Materials on the Nanoscale”. The proposed project will deliver a coherent set of tools and decision criteria for describing and establishing which are the relevant features of complex nanomaterials that determine their health and environmental risk profiles.

CODATA Initiatives: Research Data Alliance (RDA) The “Research Data Alliance” is an emerging international organization whose goal is to accelerate data-driven innovation through the sharing and exchange of research data. The official launch of RDA will take place in March in Sweden. CODATA is collaborating with RDA in preparation of a Working Group proposal on: “Legal Interoperability of Data”. CODATA will be represented at the launch.

CODATA Initiatives: World Social Sciences Forum 2013 CODATA and WDS will jointly chair a panel at the World Social Science Forum, WSSF Conference in October The panel will focus on “Data Management Challenges For Social And Natural Sciences"

New ICSU Initiative: Future Earth Future Earth is a new 10-year international research initiative that will develop the knowledge for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability in the coming decades. CODATA & WDS co-chaired a “Data Management Break-out Session” at the “Future Earth: Global Earth Change Community” Workshop (Paris, Nov. 2012) CODATA and WDS have submitted a nomination for a member of the Future Earth Scientific Committee.

Early Career Scientists CODATA has a strong focus on supporting early career scientists. Early career scientists often lack the networking opportunities available to more senior scientists. In recognition of this challenge, CODATA Conferences have dedicates sessions and targeted social events.
