Evaluation of benefits from advanced manufacturing technology Ing. Libuše Svobodová, Ph.D. University of Hradec Králové Faculty of informatics and management

Structure  Introduction  Advanced manufacturing technology survey in the Czech Republic Research methodology Advanced technologies in survey in the Czech Republic Anticipated and realized benefits in the Czech Republic  Conclusion

Introduction  Anticipated and realized benefits in the companies  Use definition: AMT it is commonly known as a collective term used to describe the new technology in manufacturing, which utilises the power of many new technologies and particularly computers.

AMT survey in the Czech Republic  Previous work 2 postal surveys (1999, 2005) 1 monograph A lot of articles  Current (last) activity

Research methodology  Data collected - during the second half of 2008 and first three months of 2009  The survey instrument – developed in 2007 and in the first half of 2008  The questionnaire - 5 sections  132 replies represented a response rate of per cent

Profile of respondents firms Number of employees Number of companies Ratio of all respondents Ratio of involved companies > Total Unknown state 96.8 Total Source: [1, pp. 116]

AT in survey in the Czech Republic  Most often used technologies: CAD, CNC, CAE, TQM, workflow, MRP and ERP  “Soft” technologies are in the involved companies used more than “hard” technologies

Anticipated and realized benefits in the Czech Republic  The first nine benefits in the “anticipated” list are all within the first nine positions in the “realized” list instead of “increased sales”  The first sixth benefits in the Czech Republic approaches to evaluation in Great Britain  Enhanced company image

Anticipated and realized benefits Rank anticipated Rank realized Reduced costs14 Improved quality22 Increased throughput31 Obtaining competitive advantage45 Increased sales511 Better management control67 Increased flexibility73 Enhanced company image86 Improved ability to respond to engineering changes 98 Reduced changeover/set-up times109 Source: own elaboration

Conclusion  The new technology may be used more  The positives - Czech managers evaluate a lot of benefits very positively  The negatives – a lot of problems in association with AMT  The area for technology specialists
