2011 CATHEDRAL IRISH FOOTBALL PLAYER HANDBOOK BROTHERHOOD IS EVERYTHING

CATHEDRAL FOOTBALL Every football team has a real and identifiable personality or image. This image is based on the players, managers, and coaches of that team. The Cathedral High School football team will project a positive attitude and image. Every individual must realize that everything they do is a reflection of the program. In order to reach the desired goal of our team, we must be willing to sacrifice our personal freedom. Our program is larger than any individual, be it a player or coach. Discipline (which by our definition is doing the right thing at the right time, with the right people for the right reason) will be the cornerstone of our program.

TEAM RULES The overriding concern for our team will be to represent the football program, Cathedral High School, the Catholic community, our families and ourselves in a positive manner. We will have four basic guidelines by which we must all abide. 1. Work Hard 2. Be Brothers! 3. Set a Good Example for each other 4. Team First BROTHERHOOD IS EVERYTHING !

ACADEMICS Each member of our football team should look at himself as a student who happens to play high school football. Playing the game of football can be a tremendously positive part of your education. The coaches will help you with your education but, we expect four things from you: 1. Turn in all homework. 2. Be respectful in the classroom. 3. Do your best. 4. Participate in class every day. If you discipline yourself and take your education seriously, you will be eligible and give yourself an opportunity to play after high school if you wish. We will monitor your academic progress through periodic grade checks. We are very lucky to have teachers who are willing to help students who need extra instruction. If you need help from a particular teacher, please schedule those meetings before school if possible. We will have some time after school for short meetings but we expect everybody at practice by 4pm. Compete to be the best that you can be in all phases of your life.

LEADERSHIP Athletically, we as coaches hope to develop leadership in all of our players. As an athlete, you will be looked upon as a leader in our school and community. You have the responsibility to make sure that you are a good leader. Wherever you are, it is your duty to conduct yourself in a manner that will bring respect to yourself, your family, our team, and to Cathedral High School. Do what is RIGHT. We expect our older players to reach out and help teach our less experienced players on the way we do things here at Cathedral. We also expect each player to consider themselves leaders of this team. Do not wait for someone else to lead you. All good leaders are first able to lead themselves.

Parent Expectations

PRACTICE ATTENDANCE As a member of the Cathedral Football team, you are expected to attend all practices and meetings unless Coach Peterson excuses you. You are also expected to be on time for all practices and meetings. Your position coach will be responsible for taking your attendance and keeping track of your attendance. There will be established penalties for missing practice or being tardy. Arrive Early for Practice and Meetings Early is on time; On time is late; Late is forgotten. How can you become a better player and how can we reach our potential as a team unless we practice together?

Parent Expectations We expect the players to be at practice. We have regular time for practice during two-a- days and during the school year. What to do if your player is injured: We expect injured players to attend practice and go to scheduled therapy with the trainer. We want to allow the player to return as soon as possible and to make sure a player stays current with what we are doing in practice.

What to do if your player is sick:If your player is running a temperature of more than 100 degrees please keep him home and call Coach Peterson. If he is not running a temperature but does not feel well please bring him to practice so at least he will be able to watch and learn what we are doing in practice. What happens if we wake up late or are running late to practice: Call Coach Peterson and still come to practice. We do not want anyone getting hurt by rushing to practice but we do need to communicate what our problems are. Communication is the key. Please contact us with questions and concerns. We all want the same thing which for your player to have a positive experience.

BUDDY LIST This season all senior and junior players will be paired with freshmen to help our younger players adjust to their new experience at CHS. The importance of getting a great start at Cathedral is vital to early success. With this in mind, our juniors and seniors will help mentor our freshmen players. It will be the responsibility of the upperclassmen to reach to the newcomers and provide a support role for them in academics and football.

Late or Emergency If an emergency should arise, call Coach Streiff: Home: School: x 384 Cell: Coach Peterson: Ours is a tough battle, let us fight like Brothers
