EGEE is a project funded by the European Union under contract IST SA1 and NA3 Alistair Mills Grid Deployment Group SA1 - CERN SA1-NA3, EGEE-2, Den Haag, 25 November

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 2 What I am going to talk about Some comments Who’s who in SA1 What SA1 has done so far about training What we can do for NA3 What we want from NA3 Plans for gLite Training needs Demo of a training item Conclusions

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 3 The importance of team work Be patient with each other Say what you will do, and then do it Say what you cannot do, if you cannot do it Do not make promises you cannot keep Do not force promises out of others which they cannot keep Communicate clearly Communicate directly (do not go via others) Keep things simple Respect one another

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 4 What is SA1? Large assembly or organisations across EGEE OMC – 1 of them (CERN) ROCs – 9 of them CICs – 4 of the 9 ROCs have additional responsibilities RCs – 48 named in TA, in fact about 70 today Other small (but important) sub organisations EIS – Application support GGUS – Trouble ticketing system JSG – Joint security group

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 5 Regional Operations Centres France Italy South West (Spain) South East (Greece) UK-Ireland (UK) North (Holland/ Sweden) Central (Poland) Germany-Switzerland (Germany) Russia

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 6 CERN: Grid Deployment Group Ian Bird Group Manager (30) CT (10) GIS (12) EIS (5) Certification Operations Integration Zdenek SekeraMarkus Schulz Flavia Donno(5) Alistair Mills Nick Thackray - The SA1/EGEE part at CERN is small (8 people) - This group deals with LCG-2 and EGEE-0 - There are other resources at CERN such as the PO and JRA1 - An important part of SA1 at CERN is to use the other resources at CERN.

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 7 CERN view of SA1 Ian Activity Manager CIC support ROC support OMC management (Nick) (Alistair) (Ian) CERN CIC - CERN OMC 4 CICs 9 ROCs - 48 RCs

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 8 SA1 training involvement so far Grid School, Oxford, July 2004 Medical VO support training, Madrid, September 2004 (More medical VO support training, CERN, next week Training event in Lyon in November 2004 Grid KA summer school, September 2004 Training in Heidelberg, October 2004 CERN Summer School, Italy, July 2004 People attended training events in many locations

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 9 What we can do for NA3? Deliver training courses on site Identify training needs Provide information on new middleware Provide exemplars for: 1. Installation/ configuration 2. Administration 3. End users Local languages

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 10 What we need from NA3 Practical help with courses Registration facility on web Course ware eg evaluation forms Usable materials A training test bed configured for the event (Flavia has written a document about our needs in this area)

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 11 gLite Leanne has talked about gLite SA1 is currently reactive to gLite We are currently starting limited trials on pre-prod service Experience from pps will identify training requirements Nick is dealing with the pps We should plan to provide initial training at EGEE-3

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 12 Training needs Well defined  End user training  Installation/ configuration of middleware  Administration of grid middleware Not well defined  Management of grid fabric  Security response  Trouble ticketing response  Virtual organisation management  Virtual organisation application support  What is required to support gLite  Network problem response

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 13 Areas of cross activity Need to strengthen support for new VOs Identified as a priority by the directorate on Tuesday The SA1 areas to strengthen are: 1. Trouble ticket handling 2. EIS This affects SA1, NA1, NA3, NA4 Support from NA3 will be mutually beneficial

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 14 Example of end user case for Grid Finite difference program solving laplace’s equation Exemplar runs on a grid of 41x (39x39) cases to be run, all independent Currently available on the Gilda test bed as a single job Work going on with EIS and NA3 at the moment to improve functionality Demo of visualisation of the results

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 15 Conclusions NA3 has made good progress in six months For the future, the requirements are going to become more difficult to deliver SA1 will continue to support the work of NA3 The establishment of a T-infrastructure with appopriate support could strengthen training The enhancement of the support for VOs and applications should be taken to the Project Directorate/ Review in February 2005

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 16 Blank

EGEE-2, SA1-NA3, 25 November 2004 – Slide 17 Blank
