Calculation: Pieces of paper on pallet. There are 60 boxes on the pallet. Each box has 5 reams. Each ream has 500 pieces of paper. We multiplied these numbers together to find: Number of pieces of paper on the pallet =60*5*500=150,000 There are 150,000 pieces of A4 on the pallet.

Calculation: Pieces of paper used Number of pieces of A4 used on an average day is estimated to be This is a guess, because there are around 2000 students, and we assume they get given, or print, a couple (two) of pieces of paper each day. Number of pieces of paper on the pallet, divided the number used per day= 150,000/4000 = 37.5 days.

Conclude

Conclusion The pallet will last approximately one month. However, it is important to note that there is more photocopying done at exam time and less during holiday time, so the time of year would effect this result. There may be a decline in the use of A4 when students start using their devices to view and create information.

Next Steps: Another project? What about the weekends? Who can we ask to get a better idea of how many pieces of paper the school uses each day? (These would be awesome number investigations!). We know to go to level 4 of the NZC Measurement we need to calculate the volume and surface area in cm or meters cubed. But why would anyone want to know that? Transportation? Storage?

Brainstorm Next Project Problem: What are the dimensions of this pallet? Purpose: To inform transport companies in order to work out how many pallets could fit on a truck, and what the minimum size truck would be. How did the pallet get off the truck? How did the truck get through the gates?
