What do you know about Interactive Notebooks? or What do you want to learn about Interactive Notebooks? Use a Post – It to write down a few thoughts to share.

Why Interactive Notebooks? Why Interactive Notebooks? New State TEKS: § Biology (c) Knowledge and skills (2) Scientific processes. The student uses scientific methods and equipment during laboratory and field investigations. The student is expected to: (F) collect and organize qualitative and quantitative data and make measurements with accuracy and precision using tools such as calculators, spreadsheet software, data-collecting probes, computers, standard laboratory glassware, microscopes, various prepared slides, stereoscopes, metric rulers, electronic balances, gel electrophoresis apparatuses, micropipettors, hand lenses, Celsius thermometers, hot plates, lab notebooks or journals, timing devices, cameras, Petri dishes, lab incubators, dissection equipment, meter sticks, and models, diagrams, or samples of biological specimens or structures; (F) collect and organize qualitative and quantitative data and make measurements with accuracy and precision using tools such as calculators, spreadsheet software, data-collecting probes, computers, standard laboratory glassware, microscopes, various prepared slides, stereoscopes, metric rulers, electronic balances, gel electrophoresis apparatuses, micropipettors, hand lenses, Celsius thermometers, hot plates, lab notebooks or journals, timing devices, cameras, Petri dishes, lab incubators, dissection equipment, meter sticks, and models, diagrams, or samples of biological specimens or structures; (H) communicate valid conclusions supported by the data through methods such as lab reports, labeled drawings, graphic organizers, journals, summaries, oral reports, and technology-based reports. What are Interactive Science Notebooks? It is… A student thinking tool (aids in mastery and memorization). An organizer for inquiry questions and reflections. A way to access and process the learning using various modalities which supports the benefits of multiple representations by science education research. A way to support differentiation as a means for all students to work at their level. A way to support differentiation as an ongoing assessment of student learning. TUSD Science Resource Center

Science Notebook Setup

Step 1: Personalize It! My Name Teacher’s Name On the cover, write: -your name -your name -campus -campus -subject teaching -subject teaching

Step 1 continued: Use the first page to make the notebook your own—encourage creativity! My own notebook designs

Step 2: Table of Contents -Leave the next left side page blank -Begin Table of Contents on the right side Table of Contents

Table of Contents (+3 additional pages) DateTitlePage #

Step 3: Numbering Turn 3 pages into your notebook (6 pages front and back) and leave those pages for the table of contents and resources, then begin numbering the next 20 pages. –Right side pages should be odd #s and left sides even #s. –Numbers should be small and at the top outside corner of every page

Title 1 Every assignment should have a title and a date.

Let’s try a few pages!

Right Side Activity #1: Your Horoscope! 1.Title pages 0 and 1 “Your Horoscope” + date 2.Complete the “Your Horoscope” activity 3.Cut out Your Horoscope and glue it onto page 1 4.Write your birth month and day onto page 1 5.Add the activity to the Table of Contents

Right Side Activity #1: Your Horoscope! continued Write hit or miss onto page 1. How many teachers were a miss? How many teachers were a hit?

Left Side Activity #1: Your Horoscope! Use page 0 to copy and answer the following reflection questions: 1. Why might a person think that his or her horoscope seems to be true? 2. Explain why Astrology is not a science.

Right Side Activity #2: Learning Profile Survey! 1.Title pages 2 & 3 Learning Profile Survey + date 2.Complete the Learning Profile Survey to identify your learning profile 3.Glue the Learning Profile Survey onto page 3 4.Add the activity to the Table of Contents

Left Side Activity #2: Learning Profile Survey debrief Use page 2 to reflect with words and/or pictures. Why are learning profiles important?

Right Side Activity #3: Learning Profile Index Card 1.Title pages 4 & 5 Learning Profile Index Card + date 2.Glue a pocket for the Learning Profile Index Card onto page 5. 3.Add the activity to the Table of Contents 4.Complete the Learning Profile Index Card

Learning Profile Index Card Now, take a few minutes to create a graphic organizer highlighting what you would place on a learning profile index card. Share with your table. Left Side Activity #3:

A Bit More On The Left: Getting Students to Think About Their Learning Left side assignments take practice and guidance! –Give class-time at first to get used to it –Allow students to view one another’s left side work for ideas and extension opportunities

Possible left side reflection prompts What did you find interesting? What did you find interesting? What would you like to investigate? What would you like to investigate? What was the main idea? What was the main idea? What are the important details to remember? What are the important details to remember? How does this relate to your life? How does this relate to your life? What don’t you understand? What don’t you understand?

What about those pages between the Table of Contents and the Activities? Resource Pages Allowing 2 pages for the Table of Contents, cut out and glue the “Right side/Left side” information page onto one of the blank pages between Table of Contents and page 0.

Reference Pages (Skip ~10 pages) Suggestions: Personal Page Periodic table Formula chart Safety Rules Safety Contract Genetic Code Chart Valence Chart Gas Law Formulas EOC formula chart What else could you have students add to these blank pages?

Left Side Activity Reflect on how interactive notebooks would be beneficial to you, your classroom and your students. Right Side Activity VENN CARD SORT Organize the cards into the following Venn diagram based on who benefits: TEACHERSTUDENT BENEFITS 76

How are they different from other organization tools used in the science classroom?

Research shows that student understanding and literacy skills improve when students do hands-on minds-on science and use science notebooks to make sense of their science investigations.

Helpful Hints for Implementation Have an up-to-date model for the kids, complete with your own left side interpretations Start slow and give class-time (at first) to keep organized Provide immediate feedback early on by checking a few notebooks daily Have occasional open notebook quizzes to inspire great notebooks Have a class Table of Contents for absent students Have a team-created rubric for grading the notebook and give to students to put in their notebooks Keep parents informed and involved
