Sequencing and the Chemistry Classroom Chemistry Memory the Painless way (maybe)

Goals and Objectives Teach kids about sequencing, chunking, the brain and memorization. Apply to specific content (elements, ions and polyatomic ions). Chunking

For Starters… Present sequencing and memory information. Use sequencing, chunking, and grouping software lab to determine span.

Step 2 Learn the elements through the natural “chunking” and grouping offered by the periodic table and hopefully developed by students.

Learning Elements Provide flashcards to students. Have students develop best way to chunk and introduce periodic table. Put in topics of primacy, recency, chunking and practice.

Step 3 Learn the ions names and symbols by chunking using associations with the periodic table.

Monatomic Ion Patterns

Fixed Variable

Iron Rusting Fe is oxidation state 0 Fe 2+ is oxidation state of 2+ A pit is formed in the Fe. Water enters the pit. Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ is exposed to oxygen and forms Fe 2 O 3 with water attached. Picture from:

Column 1Fixed Column 1 loses an electron to obtain the noble gas configuration of column 18.

The Stock system name uses Roman numerals for the charge of the ion. Copper (I) Cu 1+ Tin (IV) Sn 4+

Some words to remember for common naming -ous is less –The charge of the ion is the lower oxidation number –Example Ferrous is Fe 2+ -ic is more –The charge of the ion is the higher oxidation number –Example Ferric is Fe 3+

Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni For common naming 2+ -ous is less, 3+ -ic is more Pattern on the periodic chart

Step 4 Using chunking techniques to present and learn the polyatomic ions AMMONIUM ION (NH 4 ) +1 PHOSPHATE ION (PO 4 ) -3 PHOSPHATE ION (PO 4 ) -3

POLY ATOMIC ION MODULE SEQUENCE LEARNING CAN BE USED TO MAKE MEMORIZING THESE IONS EASIER AND MORE EFFICIENT CHUNKING IS A PROVEN WAY TO IMPROVE MEMORIZATION ABILITY A NATURAL WAY TO CHUNK DOWN TYPICALLY PRESENTED POLY IONS IS ACORDING TO THE IONS CHARGE(OXIDATION)

FIRST WE WORK ON -1 ANIONS NITRITES

COMMON NEGITIVE ONE ANIONS HYDROXIDE ION (OH) -1 PERCHLORATE ION (ClO 4 ) -1 ACETATE ION (CH 3 COO) -1 HYDROGEN CARBONATE ION (HCO 3 ) -1 AMIDE ION (NH 2 ) -1

THEN NEGATIVE TWO ANIONS CARBONATE ION (CO 3 ) -2 CHROMATE ION (CrO 4 ) -2 DICHROMATE ION (Cr 2 O 7 ) -2 SULFATE ION (SO 4 ) -2

THEN THE REST OF THEM AMMONIUM ION (NH 4 ) +1 PHOSPHATE ION (PO 4 ) -3 PHOSPHATE ION (PO 4 ) -3 PHOSPHITE ION (PO 3 ) -3 ARSENATE ION (AsO 4 ) -3

HAVE STUDENTS WORK WITHIN THEIR SPAN TO COMMIT POLY IONS FROM THEIR WORKING MEMORY TO THEIR PERMENANT MEMORY MEMORIZATION CAN BE STUDENT SELECTIVE USING FLASH CARDS OR USING REPEATED WRITING METHOD
