Periodic Table Lesson 3 6.P.2.1

Bell Work Group each of the following into different categories and then explain why you grouped them the way that you did. Lead, Gold, Copper, Carbon, Oxygen, Iron, Aluminum, Calcium, Helium, Neon, Sulfur, Silver, Titanium, Zinc 3 – 5 minutes

Recitation 5 – 10 minutes

Student Objective By the end of today you will explain the relationship between atoms and their arrangement on the periodic table.

Write the terms below in your notebook Write the terms below in your notebook. Fill them in as we go through today’s lesson. Atomic Number – Atomic Mass – Metal – Non-metal – 2 minutes

Study Jams: Periodic Table Video Clip http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/matter/periodic-table.htm 30 – 40 minutes

Element Names with Latin Origin Why is gold “Au” on the periodic table? Au comes from “aurum” which is the Latin word for gold. Write down the chart in your notebooks to help recognize each symbol by their Latin name.

What are all of the elements? https://youtu.be/DYW50F42ss8

How are the elements arranged on the periodic table and what information can we read from the periodic table? Remember to complete your vocabulary words in your notebook as they come up during the video. https://edpuzzle.com/media/558969e2c71e0fe826fd9000

One periodic table per student One periodic table per student. Keep these all year and use them as a reference.

1) Color code metals, non-metals, and metalloids 2) Include your color key 3) Draw the dividing line between metals and nonmetals

Complete Physical Science Lab as a class http://my.hrw.com/sh2/sh07_10/student/flash/virtual_investigations/hst/prt/hst_prt_vi.html

What were your definitions? Atomic Number – number of protons in the nucleus of an atom Atomic Mass – the mass of an atom Metal – typically shinny and a good conductor of electricity Non-metal – typically not shinny and not a good conductor of electricity 2 minutes
