ASHRAE Standard Method of Testing for Rating of Multi-Purpose Heat Pumps for Residential Space Conditioning and Water Heating Wayne Reedy Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Presentation name BACKGROUND Development of standard was supported by ORNL as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to facilitate market penetration of multifunction heat pumps. In order to achieve an instantly recognizable, authoritative document, a test standard was requested of ASHRAE, which in turn established a Standard Project Committee to develop Standard 206

Presentation name Committee was made up of 15 voting members, representing manufactures, testing laboratories, electric utilities, and a university; AHRI was a non-voting member. SPC 206 INCLUDED REPRESENTATION FROM ALL INDUSTRY SEGMENTS

Presentation name Standard 206 applies to electrically powered unitary heat pump equipment that provides both space conditioning and water heating functions, and may include other functions, such as dehumidification and/or ventilation. SCOPE

Presentation name Standard 206 addresses air-source, water-source, ground water-source, ground-source closed loop, and direct geoexchange equipment. It applies to air-source equipment rated below 19,000 W (65,000 Btu/h), and water-source, ground water-source, ground-source closed loop, and direct geoexchange equipment rated below 40,000 W (135,000 Btu/h). SCOPE

Presentation name Standard 206 addresses single-capacity, dual- capacity, and variable-capacity equipment Provides for up to 7 modes of equipment operation o Space conditioning only o Dedicated water heating o Dehumidification+space conditioning o Dehumidification o Space conditioning+water heating o Dehumidification+space conditioning+water heating o Dehumidification+water heating SCOPE

Presentation name Space conditioning may be heating or cooling Dehumidification may be during summer or winter Dedicated water heating may be during summer or winter, with the heat source being either indoor or outdoor SCOPE

Presentation name Test procedure covers packaged, split, mini- split, and triple split equipment configurations Refrigerant-to-water HX may be internal or external to a heat pump section or water storage tank Specifies refrigerant and water line lengths/configuration for all options SCOPE

Presentation name ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 37 Methods of Testing for Rating Electrically Driven Unitary Air- Conditioning and Heat Pump Equipment (Steady-State Performance) ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 116 Methods of Testing for Rating Seasonal Efficiency of Unitary Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps STANDARD 206 IS AN EXTENSION OF AND CONSISTENT WITH:

Presentation name AHRI Standard 210/2 40 Standard for Unitary Air-Conditioning and Air-Source Heat Pump Equipment ANSI/AHRI/ASHRAE ISO Standard Water-source heat pumps - testing and rating for performance - Part 1: Water-to-air and brine-to-air heat pumps AHRI Standard 870 Standard for Performance Rating of Direct GeoExchange Heat Pumps ANSI/ASHRAE Standard Method of Testing for Rating Residential Water Heaters STANDARD 206 IS ALSO CONSISTENT WITH:

Presentation name ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 137 Methods of Testing for Efficiency of Space-Conditioning/Water- Heating Appliances that Include a Desuperheater Water Heater and various waivers from DOE’s Central Air Conditioner and Central Air Conditioning Heat Pump Test Procedure STANDARD 206 SHOULD REPLACE:

Presentation name Water heating load Space latent load Space sensible load CALCULATION PROCEDURE IS A BIN PROCESS BASED ON:

Presentation name Three performance descriptors are used to completely describe the performance of the combined appliance: o Combined appliance space conditioning performance for the cooling season; o Combined appliance space conditioning performance for the heating season; o Combined appliance water heating performance on an annual basis. In all cases, the descriptor ends in a subscript “ca” to designate “combined appliance”. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTORS

Presentation name Air-source equipment o SEER ca o HSPF ca o EF wca Water-source equipment o EER ca o COP ca o EF wca PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTORS

Presentation name Approved as an ASHRAE standard 6/26/2013 Available from ASHRAE in paper or electronic form Includes an excel spreadsheet to perform calculations STATUS:
