The power of the block Use the 90 min reading block to combine literacy skills and science process skills Literacy Focus Skills/Strategies can be applied to science concepts: Fact and opinion Compare and contrast Cause and effect Make and confirm predictions Sequencing Locate information Summarize and paraphrase Draw conclusions Create mental images Use context to confirm meaning Read ahead Main idea and details

Meaningful Connections Inquiry Based 21st Century Hands On Meaningful Connections

Provide observation experiences Inquiry Based Promote 21st Century Skills with Children’s Engineering design briefs and other Project Based Learning activities Allow children to communicate their science experiences in a myriad of ways Provide observation experiences Formulate and record predictions Document experiences through tables, graphs, charts, pictures, etc. Compose reflections and communicate findings Labs give insight to the process behind good investigation and the vocabulary associated with it. Allow students to formulate their own hypothesis and express their findings. Encourage them to explain why

Levels of Inquiry Level 4 Level 3 Level 2 Level 1 Open Inquiry Students investigate topic-related questions that are student formulated through student designed selected procedures. Level 3 Guided Inquiry Students investigate a teacher-presented question using student designed/selected procedures. Level 2 Structured Inquiry: Students investigate a teacher-presented question through a prescribed procedure Level 1 Confirmation: Students confirm a principal through an activity in which the results are known in advance

M&M Magic Concepts for students: In a scientific experiment, a “variable” is something that can affect the outcome of an experiment. When designing a scientific experiment, it is necessary to identify and control variable. In an experiment to find out if a certain variable affects the outcome, only that variable should be allowed to vary and all other variables should be kept the same. The temperature of water affects the speed of dissolving.

Balanced Assessments Observations, Interviews, & Discussions Self-Assessments Written Assessments Performance Assessments Graphic Assessments

Plan for assessment, continually assess, gather positive results!

Assessments are NOT just about the tests. “Learning to Love Assessment” by Dr. Carol Ann Tomlinson, Professor of Education at UVA Assessments are NOT just about the tests. It is about finding multiple and different ways to let students “show what they know”. Assessments are NOT always about a grade book. Providing students with feedback to shape their learning is more important than a grade. Assessments are NOT always “formal”. Just walking around with eyes and ears open to students can gauge knowledge. Assessments are NOT separate from teaching. It is an integral part when woven through the curriculum. Assessments are NOT about the “after”. Assessments should continue throughout the unit to allow for prescriptive remediation.

A Treasure of Information is just a click away! Open the Share folder, open your grade level to find key resources designed to support your success.

Pacing Guide The placement of the SOL suggests a time for introducing content at the assigned grade level. It is expected that teachers will spiral and scaffold their instruction to the bold SOL through the year. Review of previous grade level content will be determined based on student need.

VDOE Blueprint Summary The Blueprint Summary Table shows: Reporting Categories tested Number of items from each reporting category on the test. SOLs tested. Number of items on the test. Number of field test items (not scored). Total number of items on the test.

Note Taking & Summarizing Key words or confusing words are circled or underlined for further explanation. Students ask or answer questions, record observations, make predictions, and draw conclusions. Pictures, sketches, cartoons, arrows and charts show connections and explanations. Student language reflects ideas (Literacy / Writing Connections)

Graphic Organizers Found in Virtual Share by SOL Allows students to organize their thoughts Gives students a guide to hold class discussions Attach Organizers to Science Notebooks

Investigation Stations

Science Stations Combine all learning styles and allow for differentiation Allows students to work together to make inferences, solve problem, put together authentic works (another opportunity for assessments) 4 rotations of 10-15 minutes with 4-7 students per group Stations may last two days to rotate everyone through Behavior expectations set ahead of time Stations must be organized and structured to ensure success Do stations while working with small groups of children
