Do the pilot agencies recommend statewide implementation?

Stage-based, client-centered, behavior change nutrition education for WIC clients Over 25 lessons available Available for English and Spanish speaking clients What is wichealth.org?

Eligibility and guidelines For low risk participants High risk can only use for personal knowledge Participants with Internet access who have interest in doing nutrition education online Participants can complete 2 nutrition education contacts through wichealth.org in a certification period. Participants can use wichealth.org for one nutrition education contact and then will have to be seen for next appointment for follow-up

Partner states – 25!

Health eKitchen Kitchen video library Assist with menu development and recipes Designed to utilize food benefits to the fullest Does not count as nutrition education contact

How does it work? CPA or Nutritionist promote wichealth to eligible clients for individual contact, not household CPA or Nutritionist promote wichealth to eligible clients for individual contact, not household Put an alert in MOWINS to remind agency to follow up with participant Client creates an account, completes 1 lesson and s the certificate of completion to the WIC agency by specified date Document in MOWINS Ask follow- up questions at next appt Print checks Document in MOWINS Ask follow- up questions at next appt Print checks Follow up with participants that did not complete a lesson Follow-up Questions 1. Why did they pick the lesson they did? 2. What did they learn from the lesson? 3. Review the topic with the participant for potential questions/need for clarification 4. What changes will they implement with the information for the lesson?

Stage-based, tailored, and participant centered education Increase knowledge using current technology Give participant flexibility Increases variety of nutrition education options and topics Decreases wait time in clinics and shorter clinic visits Wichealth.org can be used as a resource any time Why should you offer wichealth? It’s pretty cool that I don’t have to leave my home and drive the 20 miles to the WIC office and I can just do it at home. -WIC Client It’s pretty cool that I don’t have to leave my home and drive the 20 miles to the WIC office and I can just do it at home. -WIC Client

Saves staff time especially when it comes to scheduling nutrition education Increases accessibility to additional resources and variety of topics Decreases likelihood of missed nutrition education contacts due to staff leave time, absences, or vacation. Allows for accessibility to reports/survey results to see what topics participants like and measure impact on behavior How do staff benefit?

What clients like about wichealth This is a great idea! Especially for us working parents that also have a 9-5 job. It’s hard to take a personal or sick day. We like to use those for our sick children, not for appointments. I liked that I got to choose the topic; I have 5 children and sometimes the WIC education in the office is on something I already know. I can learn at my own pace, in the comfort of my own home, without distractions.

What staff like about wichealth I was impressed that participants remembered the lesson they did and could state something they learned or how they used the info. Great for participants with transportation issues, that work long hours, and find it difficult to come to scheduled classes. Online ed is time saving and gives participants another option for their nutrition education.

Theories behind wichealth.org Stages of Change Persuasive Communication Behavior Intent

Pre-Contemplation (PC) Not interested in changing; not aware of risks of the behavior Contemplation (C) Interested in changing Preparation (P) Ready to start taking steps to change the behavior Action (A) Has recently changed the behavior Maintenance (M) Has engaged in a healthy behavior for more than a few months Stages of change

Behavior intent comments I learned that I need to let my child let me know when she is hungry and when she is full. It is important not to force your child to eat now so later on in life she doesn’t have problems with her weight. I plan to start using shopping lists in order to cut down on eating out. To plan ahead and use coupons (: I plan on using two of the websites for sure... the app for my phone that helps with planning and list making and also the site that gives me recipe ideas for what I already have on hand. I'm especially excited to try the site to give me recipes with what is in my cupboard for last minute suppers after long days.
