Root Words Mrs. Arthrell SAT Preparation WHHS

Things to do: Create several Root word pages (follow instructions) Check your work against the rubric. Delete instruction pages Send all to Mrs. Arthrell

1. FIRST THINGS FIRST SAVE THIS FILE TO YOUR OWN FILES! (NOT A TEMP FILE!) TITLE IT: WR LAST NAME (EX: WR ARTHRELL) IF YOU DO NOT IDENTIFY YOUR FILE THIS WAY I WILL NOT OPEN IT AND YOU WILL GET A ZERO. SAVE OFTEN!!!!

2. NEXT –READ!!! GO THROUGH THE SLIDE SHOW AND READ EVERY PAGE THEN COME BACK TO HERE AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IF YOU DON’T READ THROUGH EVERYTHING, YOUR JOB WILL BE HARDER FOR YOU READ ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS!!!!

3. NEXT –DELEGATE! Decide how your group will work. I suggest that you split the terms among the group and assign a few to each member. Then you can blend the final shows together. Have one person send me the final show but everyone in the group must keep a copy in case someone is missing on presentation day. A Flash drive will be helpful in these transfers. They are cheap and necessary for the college- bound student.

4. Next – Research! Googling will slow you down. Go back to the WHHS SAT Page where you got this file and look at the sources I have found for you. Robertson’s Words is very useful, but only if you SCROOL DOWN THE PAGE and pay attention You must work with the computer – it will not work by itself.

Root Words LIST the first and last names of everyone in your group here Period -

ROOT WORD Instructions: 1.Identify the ROOT WORD 2.List the origin of the word 3.Define the word root in the space allotted. 4.In the Derivatives box, list 3-5 words with full definitions. Pick useful and interesting ones in SAT vocabulary level. 5.Add a 5-10 word list of associated words in the List box - may use simple to complex words. 6.Find 1-2 Brand name or notable uses of the word root in popular culture.

Word Root: THE ROOT Origin: the Language and possible root in that language Definition: DEFINE FULLY Derivatives box - list 3-5 words with full definitions. Pick useful and interesting ones in SAT vocabulary level. WORD: DEFINITION Name: YOUR NAME Add a 5-10 word list of other words associated with the root in this box - may use simple to complex words, but they must be DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES DEFINED TO THE LEFT! THIS WON”T BE SUPER-EASY!!! Find 1-2 BRAND NAME or NOTABLE USES of the word root in popular or common culture. INSTRUCTIONS Example next slide

Word Root: Chronos Origin: Greek - kronos Definition: time anachronism - n. - anything occurring or existing out of its proper time. chronological – adj. - of, relating to, or arranged in or according to the order of time synchronize -vb. - to cause to agree in time chronicide -n. - killing time. chronic - adj. - continuing or occurring again and again for a long time, ex:a chronic disease; habitual, such as a chronic liar or a chronic smoker Name: Mrs. Arthrell Chronology chronometer chronicle chronophobia Chronobiology Chronography heterochronic homochronous N’Sync - To be “in sync” in music means to be in harmony. The “boy band” called N’Sync was known for close 5-part harmony. Chronic is a street name for Marijuana, particularly that of a high potency or quality (this connection is made when the term is used colloquially as a vague expression of disapproval: bad, intense, severe, objectionable.)

Reminders: Remember to use SAT vocabulary – aim for grade-level appropriate words. Please use a readable font and make everything clear for the viewer. (Points will be taken away for this) Artistic license OK, but don’t overdo! You have three class days only to complete this. Your work must be MAILED TO ME BY THURSDAY MORNING BERFORE SCHOOL NO EXCEPTIONS! This means that you may have to work on your own outside of class. What a concept! You must be ON-TASK and working – not socializing or playing with the computer – or you will lose points from your final product. I am aware that we are NOT using proper citations.
