Common Core Standards UMath X Address The Common Core Access & Professional Learning

Professional Learning - Topic 1: A “Smarter, not Harder” RtI Model: Build, Draw, Talk, Write then … OWN FRACTIONS Grades 2 to 6 This Session will: ●suggest models for whole class as well as for differentiated instruction to address RtI (Response to Intervention) for fraction and decimal content in a “smarter, not harder” approach. ●provide 3-part, tiered lessons to model an environment which attempts to accommodate all learners in a diverse learning environment. ●blend digital, paper and manipulatives in lessons modified to present content and instruction.

Professional Learning - Topic 2: A Tangy Mix of Amazing Proportions - Model Concept-Driven Lessons for RtI and STEM Gr 5 to Alg 1 This Session will: ●suggest models for whole class as well as for differentiated instruction to address RtI (Response to Intervention) and some STEM for ratio and proportion content in a “smarter, not harder” approach. ●provide 3-part, tiered lessons to model an environment which attempts to accommodate all learners in a diverse learning environment. ●blend digital, paper and manipulatives in lessons modified to present content and instruction. ●provide lessons in a wide range of topics including estimation, scale drawing, similar triangles, ratio tables and linear relations.

A Diverse Concept-Driven Learning Environment

Watch Less. Do More! Instructional Paradigm Shift Towards Diverse Learning

“Active learning practices have a more significant impact on student performance than any other variable, including student background and prior achievement.” Dr. Brigid Barron and Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond, Stanford University Teaching for Meaningful Learning: A Review of Research on Inquiry-Based and Cooperative Learning

Good Mathematics... … is what you do when you don’t know answers. ●more than “persevering” ●more than “engaging” ●is “productive” struggling … is … “GRAPPLING” ie … in competition with oneself.

Show me another way? Effective Questions Productive Math Talk Moves How are these same/different? What would you do if…? Why did you…? What else could you have done? Revoicing Repeating Reasoning Adding On Waiting Students articulate their own ideas and consider peer perspectives as a way to construct understandings.

Parent Expectations Go Deep to Understand Unpack the Math Teach in New Ways Lead to Understand Broad Ability Ranges Differentiate TEACHER is the KEY!!

Components to Increase Capacity to Teach Mathematics ●Teachers need to learn how to unpack familiar mathematical concepts into those elements that combine and lead to an understanding of the concept. ●Teachers require knowledge of what is an adequate explanation of a concept or justification of a procedure. ●Teachers require an understanding and exploration of solutions or methods that are different from their own. TEACHER is the KEY!!

Support Teachers Teach for understanding. Answers not sufficient Communicate to Parents Teachers do not provide all answers. Students “grapple”. The School Leader is Key!! Towards Diverse Learning
