Conflict in the Eastern Hemisphere

Resources There are a limited amount of resources available in the world. In the Eastern Hemisphere, the fight for these resources causes conflict.

Where? What? Eastern Hemisphere - Conflict – to be in opposition

Europe Africa Asia Australia Using the maps in your book. Label the countries in the Eastern hemisphere. Europe Africa Asia Australia

Economic Competition Iran and Iraq have long fought over the oil-rich land located between them. Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein even invaded Kuwait in 1990 to start the Persian Gulf war.

India and Pakistan fight over control of Kashmir because of its water resources.

Boundary Disputes There is limited land available on Earth. The nations of the Eastern Hemisphere are in constant conflict over the land they have and their rights to more land.

The land that was the Ottoman Empire was taken over by Greece, Austria-Hungary, and Great Britain as they increased their territories.

Europe and its seas Europe protects its seas because they are used for transportation and trade.

Russia and St. Petersburg In 17-18th centuries, Russia conquered land along the Baltic Sea to use as their new capital (St. Petersburg).

Cultural Differences The different cultures located in the Eastern Hemisphere sometimes come into direct conflict with each other.

Ethnic Groups Ethnic Groups – Iraqis and Iranians have different histories and speak different languages which leads to conflict between the two groups.

Nationalism – Some ethnic groups want to have a country of their own and attempt to gain independence from their country. Many Kurds have died fighting for their independence in Turkey, Iran and Iraq.

Strategic Locations Locations are important for different reasons: Trade Transportation Religious Importance

Trade – US, Great Britain and France set up companies to build and develop oil fields in Asia and North Africa

Transportation – The Suez Canal was built to make Egypt equal to Western nations by giving them more trade opportunities. They couldn’t pay for it and sold it to Great Britain. This gave them some control over Egypt until 1956.

Religious Importance – there have been several wars between Israel and Arab due to differences in Jews and Muslims and their religious ideas.
