 CRS/ Objective  WCH 503 Use the word or phrase most appropriate in terms of the content of the sentence and tone of the essay Objective: SWBAT identify quotes that are significant to the symbol of night. SWBAT identify the tone of writing by determining subject, genre, vocabulary, and level of formality. Question: How does the tone of a passage determine the appropriate word choice?

 What is tone?  The attitude that the author adopts with regards to a specific character, place or development. Tone may be formal, informal, intimate, solemn, somber, playful, serious, ironic, condescending, or many other possible attitudes. Today we will be focusing on Formal vs Informal

 Formal: ProfessionalInformal: Casual  Avoid using colloquial words/expressions (substitute with children, man/boy, wonderful, many, etc.)  Avoid contractions (write out full words – cannot, will not, should not, etc.).  Write in third person Formal: Avoid clichés (use many, was absent, etc.)  Avoid addressing readers using second person pronouns (use one, one’s, the reader, the reader’s, etc.)  Avoid using abbreviated words (use full versions – like photograph, television, etc.)  Longer and more complex sentences are preferred (short simple sentences reflects poorly on the writer)  May use colloquial words/expressions ( kids, guy, awesome, a lot, etc.).  May use contractions ( can’t, won’t, shouldn’t, etc.).  May use first, second, or third person.  May address readers using second person pronouns ( you, your, etc)  May use abbreviated words ( photo, TV, etc)  May use short and simple sentences.
