Presentation transcript:

The student will learn a lesson plan format that will assist in teaching mathematics classes and learn the necessary parts of a behavioral objective. Lesson Planning Behavioral Objectives

Today’s lesson covers several aspects of planning but will concentrate on the daily classroom lesson plan of a developmental nature. Motivate. Introduction

Types of planning. (Need for organizational/planning skills.) Types of Planning Long range planning. Curriculum - professional responsibility. Yearly - text layout (flexibility and creativity). Grading period planning - for assessment. Weekly/monthly for substitutes in your absence. Daily - discussed next in detail.

WHY? Daily Lesson Planning Plan student involvement. Plan student assessment. To ensure students are taught what they need to know. Plan for individual differences among students. Ensure efficient use of time. Evaluate your teaching effectiveness.

WHO will use it? Daily Lesson Planning You as a guide for future planning. Your supervisor as a record of what was taught. You as a record for parents to see. You for teaching. An aide or substitute.

HOW will you use it? Daily Lesson Planning Will it be on your desk? Will you file it? Will you carry it around with you? This information will be given to you later in this lesson. What should be included?

Developmental. Types of Lesson Plans Drill. Review. Lecture.

The daily developmental lesson plan. Tells them what they are going to do. Does it. And, then tells them what they did? Plan A - The Basic Plan

Tells them what they are going to do. Does it. And, then tells them what they did? Plan B - The Backup Plan

Tell them what they are going to do. Do it. And, then tells them what they did? Plan C – All Else Fails

1. Mechanics Lesson Plan – Basic Format Name Class/Course Goal or Behavioral Objective Pre-knowledge. Date Topic List of equipment or special needs.

The objective is what drives the lesson. It describes what the student will be able to do upon completion of the instructional experience. Behavioral Objectives 2. An observable student behavior 3. The setting in which the behavior is demonstrated, and A behavioral objective has four parts – 1. The audience 4. A minimum level of acceptable performance.

Using a calculator and working in pairs the student will be able to calculate the volume of a series of rectangular parallelepiped getting accurate results 75% of the time. Behavioral Objectives and Example

Behavioral objectives are driven by active verbs – add, calculate, draw, list, measure, write, show, solve, etc. Behavioral Objectives Avoid passive verbs – appreciate, believe, enjoy, know, learn, understand, etc.

2. Body or Development Portion. Lesson Plan – Basic Format Opening activity – for review, motivation or development. Sets the tone. Introduction – tell them what you are going to do. MOTIVATE. to be continued

2. Body or Development (Continued). Lesson Plan – Basic Format Drill – model problems will help insure learning. (Assessment ) Do it! Include definitions, statements, questions and planned board work. Include applications. Motivate. Medial review. (Assessment ) Repeat the above three steps as necessary. Vary student activity. Motivate. to be continued

2. Body or Development (Continued). Lesson Plan – Basic Format Closing activity – for review, summary or concluding remarks. (Assessment ) Assign drill (Homework) (Assessment ).

Closing activity suggestions: Lesson Plan – Basic Format Teacher summary. Summarize the important points of the lesson. Discuss what you taught and what they learned. Very important 3-5 minutes. Student summary. Invite them to put the lesson into their own words. (Assessment ). Lesson product. Invite students to incorporate lesson into a poster, brochure, model, or portfolio.

3. “If time” activities, just in case. Lesson Plan – Basic Format 4. Assessment procedures used during the class period. 5.Self evaluation. * How was my pacing? * Did student learn? * Were students engaged? * What should I change? * What new activities/procedures could I include?

Lesson Plan – Basic Format 7.Statement of the NCTM Standards you have satisfied in the lesson. I want the bullets quoted directly from the document. In real life you will need to include the state and/or district standards. 6. Techniques used. See Johnson, Appendix A plus my previous lesson plans.

Put the body or development section on one side of the paper and the pre-stuff and post-stuff on the other side. Lesson Planning Hints Use white space and margins to keep the plan readable. Use a highlighter to emphasize important points. Include all auxiliary materials – warm-up, drill exercises, examples, worksheets, etc.

The importance and format of a daily developmental lesson plan. Review

Assignment Read: Posamentier, Chapter 2 pages 28-32, “What is Cooperative Learning?”. Construct a sample lesson plan with all attachments.
