To share the ways in which ICT can be used to enhance the Maths curriculum and provide opportunities for creative learning Purpose of this session:  Key Stage 1  Key Stage 2  Gifted & Talented  Free  New  Different

Why ICT? Key tools to enhance creative Maths  Use of images  Use of peripherals  Use of Fronter  Use of websites Examples of learning Purpose of this session:

ICT can make whole-class mathematics teaching: Easier Materials and resources can be quickly prepared, stored and retrieved. Work can be saved for later continuation or review. Work can be displayed or printed out at any stage and easily shared. Better The medium allows the presentation and flexible manipulation of resources. It engages pupil attention, enables differentiation and facilitates interaction. Different It allows the presentation of a wide range of resources (for example, websites), which may not be accessible in any other way. Why ICT? How can I improve the teaching of Maths?

Within the National Curriculum, there are a number of skills and knowledge areas which can be applied to all subjects. These are known as Common Requirements. Teachers are obliged to teach IT skills across the curriculum. Why ICT? Common Requirements

Early Years and Key Stage 1 Pupils should be given opportunities to use calculators and computer software, including a database, both as a means of exploring number and as tools for calculating with realistic data, e.g. numbers with several digits. Pupils should be given opportunities to experience early ideas of position and movement through practical activity including the use of ICT devices, e.g. programmable toys, turtle graphics packages. Common Requirements for IT Skills in Maths

Key Stage 2 Pupils should be given opportunities to use calculators, computers and a range of other sources, as tools for exploring number structure and to enable work with realistic data. Pupils should be given opportunities to extend their understanding of position and movement using a wide range of materials, including the use of computer software, to create and transform shapes. Common Requirements for IT Skills in Maths

You might use: a digital camera to take pictures of shapes found around the school a CD-ROM to research data on the heights of mountains; calculators to convert fractions into decimals; audio tapes for learning counting and multiplication facts; numberlines displayed on a large computer screen; a television clip to focus on an aspect of mathematics; a visualiser to record data over a period of time; data-logging equipment to record changes in temperature ; the Internet to access up-to-date weather data.

Why ICT? What learning is taking place? How creative is this?

Use a photo or artwork Insert into SMART Notebook or use Capture Use as the stimulus for a mental warm- up/investigation Use of images

Use a visualiser for real processes Use a camera to make a Maths story Use a datalogger to look at patterns and dials Use of peripherals
