Cases of Violence Against Women Handled by Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA)

A CASE OF RAPE INVOLVING A SOLDIER AND A FULANI NURSING MOTHER.WRAPA/KD/VOL11/002.(Kaduna State pg 15) This incident occurred on Friday 18th March 2005 at No 1A Sani Sami Street, Malali, Kaduna. On the said date, a soldier named Ibrahim Sapper Kola was said to have raped a nursing Fulani mother by name Lauratu Yakubu. ACTION TAKEN A letter was written to the General Officer Commanding1 mechanized infantry division, Nigerian Army division on the above case. OUTCOME The soldier was disciplined through arresting and detained for a period of 42days before tried by his unit. He was found guilty of assault and based on hat, awarded 28days imprisonment and made to forfeit his one month salary.

CASE OF BATTERY INVOLVING MALAMA SALAMATU VS MALAM MOHAMMED.(Kaduna State Pg 3) This case was reported on the 1st of December 2003 by Malam Sanusi Bello (uncle to the victim) who alleged that his niece was severely beaten by her ex-husband Mallam Mohammed on the account of seeing her talking to another man. ACTION TAKEN On receiving this case, the state chapter contacted a lawyer to investigate the case properly and ensure the offender was brought to book. OUTCOME The complaint (Mallam Sanusi Bello) refused to come on the day the journey was meant to be and nothing has been heard of him since then.

CASE OF MOLESTATION INVOLVING MALAM DAUDA USMAN VS AMINA ABDULAHI (Kaduna State Pg 3) After the dissolution of their marriage, Amina Abdulahi was made to pay compensation to the husband on account that she rejected to continue with his marriage. ACTION TAKEN: A team was formed to talk and Counsel Malam Dauda Usman OUTCOME: He agreed to stop and actually did according to investigations.

A CASE OF RAPE OF A EIGHT (8) YEAR OLD GIRL. (Gombe State Pg 10) The rape incident occurred since 21st November ACTION TAKEN Case taken to criminal court OUTCOME Case still in court

CASE OF MALTREATMENT INVOLVING A YOUNG MOTHER AND HER HUSBAND BABAWARO. (Gombe state pg 10) The young woman was forced to live her matrimonial home as a result of maltreatment from her drunkard husband. ACTION TAKEN Case was taken to court. OUTCOME Case still in court.

CASE INVOLVING JANET YUSUF (9YRS OLD) AND GANIYU BABAYO (34YRS OLD) (Gombe State Pg 5) The case was reported on the 24th of November 2005 at 6.00pm by her mother Mrs. Juliana. It stated that Ganiyu who has been her house help and security in the house for three tears took advantage of Janet while she was out of the house. ACTION TAKEN The case was reported to the police and he was subsequently arrested. OUTCOME Case still in court.

CASE OF RAPE INVOLVING HAJARA ABDULAHI (AN SS2 STUDENT) AND FOUR HOOLIGANS ( Gombe State Pg 54) The incident took place on the 19th of December The victim is an ss2 student at the Arabic Teachers College, Gombe. She was raped by four (4) hooligans while two others kept watch. The victim was sent to give her grandmother food when she was tracked and forced into an uncompleted building where she was raped in turns. ACTION TAKEN: The boys were arrested as she identified one of them leading to the arrest of others. OUTCOME: Waiting for the date fixed for trial at court.

CASE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST MRS ESTHER NNEJI BY HER HUSBAND MR UCHE NNEJI (Gombe State Pg 41) On the 27th of January 2007, Mrs. Esther Nneji reported a case of violence against her by her husband who violently took over the business of pure water she started with her merger resources and also a case of battery. ACTION TAKEN Legal advice was sought. The husband was contacted but refused to answer any questions. OUTCOME After many persuasions, the husband promised to give her capital to start another business but after much investigation I was gathered that he failed to do so as he was duped by another wife he married.

A CASE OF MURDER INVOLVING BIBA HAMIDU BY HER HUSBAND. (Gombe State Pg10) The deceased was married to her husband for seven years before her death. The said husband had been constantly beating her which made her leave for her father’s house. On the 7th of October 2007, he came and was told she was off to the farm. He trailed her to the farm and murdered her there leaving their six months old child tied to her back. It was gathered later that the baby died. ACTION TAKEN The case was reported to the police and he was arrested OUTCOME He is currently awaiting trial for a case of murder in the court.

CASE OF BETTERY INVOLVING MRS RHODA ADAMU WAFARA AND HER BROTHER INLAW. (Plateau State Pg 97) The case was formally reported to WRAPA on the 8th of February Mrs. Rhoda Adamu Wafara claimed that before the 8th of February 2005 at about 10.00pm, Mohammed Wafara (her brother in-law) came to her house and beat her up. ACTION TAKEN: The case was taken up by WRAPA and Mohammed was arrested and was made to sign an undertaking never to beat or molest her again. OUTCOME: Mohammed signed the undertaking and also promised never to touch or disturb her and if he did, legal actions should be taken on him.

CASE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST MRS GODIYA ADAMU BY HER HUSBAND. (Plateau State Pg 89) The case was reported to WRAPA on the 3rd of February The victim, Mrs. Godiya Adamu had been sexually assaulted and has been beaten up several times by the father of her child. She is a victim of early marriage as a result of teenage pregnancy. ACTION TAKEN Waziri Ibrahim (husband of the victim) was counseled and his area of weakness pointed out to him. He was made to sign an undertaking to care for their child. There was also a reconciliation process between herself and her father who forced her into the marriage. OUTCOME Waziri Ibrahim apologized to Godiya and gave money and gifts o her. Also father and daughter were reunited and he bought gifts for her. He even promised to buy her a computer after her training as she is going through one.

CASE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/ASSAULT INVOLVING AMINA HUSSEINI BY HER HUSBAND.(Bauchi State Pg 3) On the 21st of August 2002 at 9:30am, Amina Hussein was called by her husband Mallam Adamu (45yrs old) after sending all the children to the farm, he approached her like he wanted to have a conversation with her but instead squeezed her throat, he brought out a knife from and attempted to slaughter her, she grabbed the knife in self defense but got a deep cut on her palm. While struggling to free herself, he caught her by her right knee joint and removed the leg completely. He ran away leaving her fainted in a pool of her blood. ACTION TAKEN: WRAPA visited the victim in the hospital contacted the police, the Governor of Bauchi state and also Media houses on the case. The culprit was arrested by the police. OUTCOME: Case still in court. The victim has been receiving gifts in kind and cash from both the Governor, Government, N.G.O’s and individual and she is still receiving treatment at Bauchi state specialist Hospital.

CASE OF BATTERY INVOLVING MRS CHRISTIANA DASHE AND HER HUSBAND Mrs. Christiana lodged a complain that her husband Mr. James comes home drunk and beats her up. ACTION TAKEN The both parties were counseled and the husband warned against the implications should he continue beating her. OUTCOME The wife’s parents were visited by some WRAPA staffs and were encouraged to allow their daughter continue with her marriage as the husband had shown remorse over the issue.

A CASE OF A STUDENT (15YRS OLD) RAPED IN LAFIA TOWN (Nassarawa State pg 81) On the 22nd of Feb the above case was reported to WRAPA office. The victim was raped by one Mr. Shariff Saleh (saleh Nadada) on the 13th of February 2008 at 12.00noon. She was sent to fetch water by her mother. The said Sheriff a neighbor sent her on her errand to buy him food; he directed her to get a plate from his matrimonial room and raped her there. ACTION TAKEN Suggestion was made that since the man was from Jos, the Coordinator of Plateau state should take up the investigation of the family house of Saleh Nadada. Useful information was provided

CASE OF CRIMINAL OFFENCE ON AISHA MAIKUDI GUMAU (Bauchi State Pg 5) The two hands of Aisha Maikudi a 13years old girl living with her half brother Dankassim at Gamau in Toro local Government of Bauchi state were terribly mutilated by him. this was as a result of a negligible misdemeanor of thirty naira (N 30) which Dankassim’s niece Aisha took from Dankassim’s mother’s bedroom without permission. This case was reported to WRAPA office on the 24th of April ACTION TAKEN On hearing of the case, WRAPA coordinator of Bauchi contacted it’s headquarter about the incident and also informed them on the arrest. He was arrested and arraigned before an area court that sentenced him to three years imprisonment or a fine of ten thousand naira (N10, 000) and also N12, 000 as compensation to Aisha which he did proudly. WRAPA assisted in securing a return ticket for Aisha’s surgery abroad with also the help of a Good Samaritan who paid for all other expenses of Aisha excluding the surgery which was free. OUTCOME WRAPA and other organizations has expressed dissatisfaction over the judgments and an appeal is set to be made. Aisha has been flown abroad for her surgery.

Based on an eye witness account, the Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Lokoja reported thus: “At a robbery incidence in the first week of December along the Kabba/Obajana highway in Kogi state, many women were raped. One of them was raped while her father watched helplessly”.
