Welcome to Pick Me Ups!

Questions to Answer What is the Pick Me Ups program? Why is Pilot doing Pick Me Ups? Who are family caregivers, and what do they want or need? What are Pick Me Ups gifts? How do I give a Pick Me Up?

What is the Pick Me Ups Program? Mission: Pick Me Ups seeks to uplift and appreciate family caregivers by providing needed services or small gifts to brighten their day. The Vision of the Pick Me Ups initiative is to promote awareness of the needs of family caregivers.

Why is Pilot Doing Pick Me Ups? Reason 1: Caregiving Effects Everyone! "There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers, those who will need caregivers.” - Rosalynn Carter

Why is Pilot Doing Pick Me Ups? Reason 2: International Visibility The more we share about this program, the more people around the world will know about Pilot International. Pick Me Ups is a great tool to help our organization GROW!

Why is Pilot Doing Pick Me Ups? INTERNATIONAL VISIBLITY – WHY? Why do we need to promote Pick Me Ups? Why do we need to promote Pilot International? Public Relations (PR) = How we relate to our “publics.” A successful public relations plan builds and maintains positive relationships between an organization (Pilot International) and all of its 'publics' (the community and potential members). Promotion = The practice that keeps Pilot International in the minds of the community and helps stimulate demand for the services of our group.

Why is Pilot Doing Pick Me Ups? INTERNATIONAL VISIBLITY – HOW? Determine a club Pick Me Ups PR/Promotional Budget Make a list of local businesses (restaurants, offices, etc.) or public spaces (churches, libraries, community centers, etc.) where you could place your materials Make a list of local newspapers and their human interest reporters. Send press releases directly to that individual as Pick Me Ups events occur. Make sure to place yard signs at the home of Pick Me Ups recipients as Pick Me Ups events occur Use your club's Facebook page and/or Twitter feed to feature Pick Me Ups events as they occur

Who are Family Caregivers? Adults: At any time, there are an estimated 65.7 Million Caregivers in the U.S.* Youth: A 2005 report estimated that there were at least 1.3 million [youth caregivers] between the ages of 8 and most caring for a parent or grandparent, some looking after a sibling.”* *See PMUs manuals for data sources

What Do Family Caregivers Want? Family Caregivers were surveyed about areas where they would like more help or information. Here are two key responses: 34% said managing their own stress 32% said finding time for themselves

What are Pick Me Ups? Help plan a family reunion List of caregiver resources Gift certificates for: – Dinner out – Manicure – New clothes – Book – Video game (youth caregiver) – Haircut – Gym membership – Something specific or unique as requested by the caregiver him/herself A meal Home-baked treats Handmade gifts (blankets, knitted or crocheted items, etc.) A flower or a bouquet A basket or tote bag Yard Work Card games

What are Pick Me Ups Gifts? SAMPLE SCENARIO Emily Johnson, a retired school teacher, was known for taking care of those who needed it, she was the first to lend a helping hand, including baking pies for those in her community when “someone just needed a little something to brighten their day”. Throughout her life she showed selfless acts including becoming a foster parent for three children, leading a free after school program for latchkey children of low income families, and starting an operation backpack effort that sends low income kids home with meals each weekend. Even though Emily is raising her oldest foster son’s child, taking care of her husband who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and is taking care of her mother who is in her nineties, she continues to run the afterschool program and backpack effort. All of Emily’s discretionary income goes to helping her family and school programs. The other day one of the volunteers at the afterschool program heard Emily say it had been three years since she had her hair colored or her nails done. When the agency applied for the Pick Me Up for Emily they asked her what she would like. The only thing she wanted was something for the children she works with. Not a surprise to them. The agency decided they wanted her to have something for her – a day of pampering and perhaps some homemade goodies - something that Emily loved and was symbolic of her caring nature. They wanted Emily to have a Pilot “Pick Me Up”.

What are Pick Me Ups Gifts? Emily Johnson, an extraordinary caregiver, said it has been three years since she had her hair colored or her nails done. Although Emily asked only for something for the children she serves, the agency that nominated Emily for a Pick Me Up wanted her to have something for her – a day of pampering and perhaps some homemade goodies - something that Emily loved and was symbolic of her caring nature. They wanted Emily to have a Pilot “Pick Me Up”. Small Pick Me Up Example: Bake her a plate of cookies or a pie A gift certificate for a manicure ($20 or donated)
