It is Monday morning. You have had a great weekend working in the yard, dinner at Metro Grill and you even took a one-hour nap yesterday. This morning it was raining and Campbell was a parking lot. The person next to you

…in traffic, behind fogged windows, was playing his car stereo so loud, your heart is still keeping that beat. You got to your desk, clicked open your to find 38 messages! Your boss just came by to remind you a project report is due by 3:00 p.m. (which you have not started yet). In looking through your mail you found a memo indicating you made a series of basic accounting errors in a report to an influential internal customer.

The coworker next to you is asking for information about the new software program. You know the answer but this will take a long time to go through it, again! Your significant other is on the phone telling you he/she is sorry. Another coworker comes by to tell you he/she looked at your car in the parking lot and you have a flat tire…and…you just realized you do not have any more Tums left in your desk drawer.

Is your organization expecting new skills from you? Is the “just- in-time” attitude present from both your internal and external customers?

Is your life getting more or less emotionally complicated at home? Are the schedules of others in your house jerking you around?

Are any of your close friends in crisis right now? Have you lost an important friendship recently? Do you have time to nurture friendships?

Do you have a health concern you have not shared with a medical professional? Are you getting enough sleep? Do you eat the right foods?

How would you describe the quality of your life? Do you regularly slip into periods of depression? What have you done in the past 24 hours that has made you laugh?

Employees around the world have been strapped to the wheel of continuous improvement. With eyes glazed, they have repeated the mantra: faster, better, cheaper. Employees have found themselves working harder and harder to achieve less and less. That’s the reward for surviving the downsizing, outsourcing, and restructuring that have so dramatically thinned the ranks of industrial-age companies. ---Gary Hamel, Leading the Revolution
