HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Period: 2 Sam Park, Anthony Hwang

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM The Endocrine System regulates and controls the physical and chemical changes or processes within the body. Changes such as growth, metabolism, digestion, etc.

PANCREAS AND PINEAL GLAND

FUNCTION  Pancreas: Exocrine- digestive enzymes Endocrine- pumps hormones into bloodstream, insulin, and glucagon

FUNCTION (CONT.)  Pineal: Melatonin- wake-sleep cycle, sexual development  Serotonin- helps to regulate “good mood” feelings  Dimethyltryptamine (DMT)- dreaming, and or “psychoactive” activities

DISEASES  Pancreatis- Majority of the time caused by gallstones or alcohol  Symptoms- Upper abdominal pain, Nausea, progressive vomiting whilst eating

DISEASES CONT.  Excess Melatonin- caused by excess production through lack of light or excess melatonin intake  Symptoms, Daytime Drowsiness, fatigue, lack of drive or depression

INTERESTING FACTS  The pineal gland is also known as the third eye  The “gateway to our real selves”  Pancreatic cancer is fatal, chances of surviving it are low, the survival rate is 20% in the first year of acquisition.

CC  What are the functions of the pancreas and the pineal gland?  Pineal Gland-Melatonin- wake-sleep cycle, sexual development,Pancreas Exocrine- digestive enzymes Endocrine- Pump hormones into bloodstream, Insulin, and glucagon. Regulates glucose  What hormones do both glands secrete?  Glucagon,Insulin for pancreas and melatonin for pineal gland  How fatal is pancreatic cancer?  Very fatal with chances of survival very low  How does one get excess melatonin?  By taking melatonin pills or having their pineal gland produce excess melatonin `
