Health 7 Personal Standards Outcome 7.1: Establish strategies to commit to personal standards that one can control during day to day

Lesson 1: Human Values and Virtues Questions to consider What are values and virtues? What strategies can we have to help support my values?

Terms Value- What someone believes in I.e. valuing honesty means you believe people should be honest Virtue: A good or admirable quality I.e. the virtue of knowing one’s weaknesses

Think about it… What we value most tends to direct our decision-making throughout our lies As we mature we develop more values with more responsibility and experiences but we rarely lose the ones we had as a child. Examples where we would lose ones we had as a child?

Activity 1: List all the things you value in life. Rank those values on a scale of 1 to 5 1: being value sometimes 5: being value all the time Write a 2-3 sentence explanation for each value that had a 5 next to it and why it was given a “5”.

Lesson 2: Challenges Questions to consider What does it mean to have your values challenged? What does it mean to have your values reinforced? How can we handle it when we are in those situations?

Resiliency To push forward when times are hard To stay strong through difficult times To recover from illness, depression or adversity To push through hard times and surviving Write down 2 examples of times you have been resilient. (sports, school, family, etc)

Being Resilient Being Resilient Handout

Resiliency Example Sam was a great hockey player. Sam's father has just lost his job. They are having trouble paying the bills and extra costs are too hard for them. Sam offered to quit hockey if that would help his family. They have agreed that sports are important but that he may now have to buy used equipment. They are resilient, staying strong and sticking together when times are tough. http://roccataylor.wordpress.com/2013/10/30/kobra-kourage/ Questions: What adversity was the Kindersley Kobra’s football team faced with? How was the team resilient?

Support Systems You cannot always tackle all problems yourself Sometimes we need support from others to help us conquer challenges What are some support systems you rely on?

Kids Help Phone One support system useful for young teenagers is Kids Help Phone If you feel like you cannot talk to someone else, Kids Help Phone is an anonymous way to talk to someone. It is a free online counselling service and they will help with any problem big or small
