PDP Workshop First Experiences of running an HEO module: Taking an online approach Yong Xue & Pete Chalk, CCTM
CS1H04N: Computer Systems Architecture The story so far… Sem 1: used on-line LMU PDP at Two PDP-related assignments: 1. PDP start of course (wk 6, 10%) 2. PDP feedback, OPP & CV (wk 12, 20%) Issues: large module, many TAs, many handins, and how to mark the PDP? Marking 0/10 and 0/10/20 (nosub, sub, ‘reflective’)
Semester 2 - WebCT CS1H04N running again, but small group Use WebCT – advantages online submission & access to assignments multiple choice quiz for CSA content shared access to assignment marking community of learning & shared feedback Created PDP WebCT Template (sem 1) & instantiated for whole HEO module
PDP Template in WebCT (sem 1)
PDP + HEO module in WebCT
How did the module change? Students (& staff) are learning how to use WebCT & online communication Biggest change unrelated, to change assignment 2: “reflect upon the content of the PDP, and your research report, … describe the development of your skills and knowledge”
On-line PDP alternatives Delivering the PDP booklet (LMU now) - problem is no shared access Using WebCT in core modules - problem is no continuity Develop local solution like TVU (pto) - problem is lack of external standardisation & interoperability
Example of university specific on-line PDP: TVU
TVU Action Planning (& to tutor)
An on-line future? Why? External agencies, government, employer may require progress file (transcript + PDP) & rest of sector: Access granted to all who need it: student, PAA, core module tutor, academic admin, employers Interoperable: part of single integrated system, eg eVision & external software (SITS project or LUSID - lusid.liv.ac.uk) Do we wait, do we develop?
