Concern has received €745,000 so far while Trócaire has raised €110,000 from the public. Goal, Oxfam and Christian Aid have all received significant amounts from donations and are expecting more in the coming days and weeks. The Haitian Red Cross estimate that so far between 45,000 to 50,000 people have died with 3 million more - one third of Haiti's population - left injured or homeless by the 7.0 magnitude quake that hit its impoverished capital on Tuesday. The international relief effort in Haiti is gathering pace, with governments and charitable organisations from at least 30 countries pledging support for the stricken population. Charities from Ireland have been among those active in the region, supplying personnel as well as funds and materials. Concern aim to provide funds for products such as water-purification tablets, tents, plastic sheeting, blankets in addition to personnel, such as medical workers and nutritionists working in hospitals and distributing food and water to the population. Trócaire have been working in conjunction with international charities and NGOs, particularly long-term partners US-based CRS and the organisation Caritas Haiti. The charity has raised €110,000 to date though this figure is rising rapidly. Oxfam have an existing team of 100 across Haiti, among them 15 emergency specialists, and are sending additional help to the worst hit areas. Again the focus is on necessities like clean water, shelter and sanitation. The Government has pledged €2m to the relief effort and today announced plans to send a team of experts to Haiti to assist in the international emergency effort in the wake of this week’s devastating earthquake. “This team, whose members are highly-experienced in emergency situations, will initially assess the immediate needs of the Haitian people and identify short-term gaps in the overall response. “They will also examine the medium to longer-term requirements in terms of recovery and rehabilitation and liaise with the United Nations, other international donors and our NGO partners on the ground to ensure that aid is being delivered to those who need it most as quickly and effectively as possible,” the Ministers said.
