Ch. 11-Persuasion

What is Persuasion? Persuasive speaking includes 3 motives Make your audience believe what you believe Make your audience think like you think Cause your audience to do what you want them to do

What is Persuasion Three Sources of Persuasion Logos Pathos Ethos

Logos the thinking process that allows the listener to arrive at logical conclusions EXAMPLES: Taking public transportation to work will cut your monthly gas costs. Taking public transportation to work will decrease the wear and tear on your personal vehicle.

Pathos the use of emotional appeals and language to relate to the listener’s needs, drives, and desires EXAMPLES: Imagine the ease of letting someone else drive you to work while you sip your coffee and catch up on your book. Think of how much less stress you have to deal with when you aren’t the one battling through traffic during rush hour.

Ethos the speaker’s character in the minds of the audience EXAMPLES: Credibility Reliability Sincerity

Types of Audiences Supportive Audience- Uncommitted Audience- Friendly, like you and what you have to say EXAMPLES: Speaking to your friends and family Republican politician speaking to republicans Uncommitted Audience- Neutral, need information to make up minds You speaking to a group of people you don’t know Speaking to people who don’t know anything about the topic

Types of Audiences (continued) Indifferent Audience- Apathetic, bored, don’t think what you say applies to them EXAMPLES: Me teaching a group of 13 and 14 year olds science Your mom lecturing you about cleaning your room Opposed Audience- Hostile, dislike you and what you have to say Obama speaking to a group of republicans Speaking to a group of your enemies
