International Baccalaureate Introducing: The Personal Project

Why do we do a personal project? The personal project is a CULMINATING project…it reflects all that you have learned and experienced as an IB student and as an IB learner. The personal project is an excellent opportunity for you to produce a truly personal piece of work of your choice and to demonstrate the skills you have developed.

Why is the personal project extraordinarily cool? Because…

It is about finding your passion…about what is truly meaningful to you…

What is PASSION? …something you love, something you are excited about, something you get up early or stay up late to do. “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” R. W. Emerson “Choose a job you like and you will never have to work a day in your life.” --Confucius

A personal project… Has a clear and achievable goal. Is focused on one of the areas of interaction Allows you to express a truly personal message

A personal project… Is the result of YOUR initiative, YOUR creativity, and YOUR ability to organize and plan. Reflects your special interests, hobbies, special abilities, or concerns about particular issues. Deals with a topic or area to which you are COMMITTED. Is entirely your own work – authenticity is very important.

Ideas for a personal project …

Want to train to become a marathon runner? Make a rap CD? Build an Inuit kayak? Assemble a PC? Make a school newsletter? Create a photography showcase of Fridley since it’s conception? Design a green home?

Create an environmental board game? Learn how to edit pictures in Adobe Photoshop? Make a movie? Plan and teach a lesson in middle school? Learn how to be a party planner? Research tamale recipes?

Create a how to surf video? Write a short story?...a novel? Design a clothing line? Design a dance video? Build a remote controlled airplane? The ideas are endless…..

Where do I begin? Find your passion Take an Interest Inventory survey Select your supervisor Investigate your topic Set a realistic goal …..Now you are ready--ENJOY!

Supervisor Select a supervisor who will meet with you throughout this process. The supervisor does not need to be an expert on the topic, but can guide and help your investigation. At a minimum, meet with your supervisor to: – Formulate your goal and review specifications – Throughout the project to check progress/advice – Near completion to reflect

The Areas of Interaction…

Community and Service How do we live in relation to each other? How can I contribute to the community? How can I help others?

Health and Social Education How do I think and act? How am I changing? How can I look after myself and others?

Environments What are our environments? What resources do we have or need? What are my responsibilities?

Human Ingenuity Why and how do we create? What are the consequences?

Process Journal  Record progress regularly Thoughts, ideas, decisions, feelings, actions, reflections Will help to organize your report Use during meetings with your supervisor Must be turned in with final paper. MYP Personal Project

Academic Honesty Both the paper and the product MUST be your own original work. Always cite your sources!
