Unit 70 Task 1 Matthew Wilson, Gary Rich, Callum Tracey, Luke Scrannage

Platforms PC, Xbox, PS3, Wii, Wii-U Why we chose PC. We chose PC as it has a more open and broad range of programming engines directly accessible through the PC itself. It is also cheaper to program for software and software needed is easily accessible. There are many Different compatibility codes used to transfer any production or software and games; For example to transfer an XBOX production across to disk the code would be different to PS3 and the code for PS3 would be different to Wii or Wii-U etc. Free resources such as tutorials, Maya, 3DS Max and other programs allow faster production and design.

Engines Cry engine, UDK, Source, Frostbite 2, Glacier 2 Depending on hardware and software used to support the graphics or frame rate we have decided to choose Unreal. The reason for this is because we have UDK on the computers that we are using in class. We looked at a video comparing unreal engine 3 vs. Cry engine 3 comparing graphics looking in depth at shadowing, feathering (Soft or sharp), draw distance and general over graphics. We took the rendering time and price of the software into consideration and also how important graphics are compared to Frame Rate and vice versa and that led us to compare Crysis 2 in low graphics and max graphics.

Genre Driving, FPS TPS (First Person Shooter, Third Person Shooter), Platform, Strategy, RPG (Role Playing Game) SIM (Simulator) We have chosen to create a platform game as they suit any gaming platform especially PC. A platform game is more likely to be easier to create depending on the depth of graphics and the length of the game i.e. Story or extra features.

Revenue From choosing PC as the platform we can justify our decision as PC gaming is set to surpass console gaming in revenue by the year Research suggests that several games including DOTA 2, Diablo III and The Old Republic are going to be PC-only titles with others (like Battlefield 3, RAGE and Skyrim) that will without question look better and play better on the PC. This sets up a great time for hardware companies like NVIDIA and AMD to sell system upgrades in order to maximize user experience in these titles. While most gaming pundits have been telling us for years that PC gaming is dying, the report from DFC tells a different story: there is steady growth in PC gaming whereas Console gaming seems to stay at an average rate.

External support considerations Tutorials and Documentation to help with using UDK for the first time. As you can see on the left there are options on the welcome screen allowing the user to select an option taking them to documentation, video tutorials, or forums allowing them to get both professional and self experienced people who have self taught from experimenting with different parts of the software.

Research Summary We have researched some engines and have extracted (highlighted) parts of the research we think is important. Unreal Engine 3 Third and current generation of unreal designed for direct- X (Windows and Xbox 360) as well as systems using OpenGL including PS3 MAC Android etc. Advanced techniques include HDRR, Per-Pixel Lighting and dynamic shadows. HDRR stands for High dynamic range rendering or Lighting. It is the rendering of computer graphics scenes by using lighting calculations and comparing it to the drawing distance to allow a larger rendering range. Unreal Engine 3 runs on both Windows 8 and Windows RT (Android gaming)
