Module 1: Orientation to ICS Objectives Upon completion of this module, you will be able to: Name 5 primary ICS management functions Explain duties of Command and General Staff Match organizational units with appropriate ICS sections Match supervisory titles with appropriate ICS levels Explain purpose of principal ICS facilities Describe what an Incident Action Plan is and how it’s used Describe span of control List major responsibilities while at an incident

Primary ICS Management Functions Module 1: Orientation to ICS Primary ICS Management Functions ICS Management Function Responsibilities COMMAND ICT responsible for overall management of incident PLANNING Collection, evaluation and display of incident information OPERATIONS Directing tactical actions to meet incident objectives LOGISTICS Providing services and support to meet incident needs FINANCE Providing accounting, procurement, time recording, and cost analyses ICT has responsibility for all functions; however, the ICT may delegate authority to perform certain functions to other people in the organization. Delegation doesn’t relieve the ICT from overall responsibility.

Module 1: Orientation to ICS Operations Section Operations Section setup depending on: Kind of incident Objectives and strategy Agencies involved Operations may be organized into: Geographic Divisions that define the incident Functional Groups that deal with functional activities which may operate across divisional lines Branches established to meet span of control and may be geographic or functional Operations Section directs and coordinates all tactical operations Divisions are alphabetical and move clockwise Agencies that use the term Sector are using NIIMS form of ICS, not strict ICS as practiced in NWCG course

Module 1: Orientation to ICS Organizational Element Logistics Section Organizational Element Responsibilities Service Branch Communications Unit Develop Communications Plan, and distribute and maintain communications equipment Medical Unit Develop Medical Plan, and provide first aid for personnel assigned to incident Food Unit Determine and provide food and water to incident Support Branch Supply Unit Order all personnel, equipment and supplies Ground Support Unit Provide transportation and fuel assigned vehicles Facilities Unit Setup and maintain whatever facilities may be required
