CSE Senior Design I Superior Designs, Inc. Spring 2012 Approved Projects (for delivery August 2012) Instructor: Mike O’Dell

1 Smart Fitness Trainer  Develop a system for Xbox 360, Wii or similar gaming device that simulates a personal fitness trainer  Uses image analysis/sensors to detect player’s position and movements and provides instructions/commands.  Monitors activity level, heart rate, etc and gives real-time feedback.  Sponsor: (TBD)

1 Digital Audio Recorder (DAR)  Develop an audio version of a DVR (a.k.a. “Audio Tivo”) for the a car radio  Integrate/implement hardware to store and manipulate digital audio stream for “real-time” playback  Implement “rewind”, “fast forward,” “jump to live,” and other functions similar to those found on a DVR via a smart phone app  Sponsor: (TBD)

1 Automotive Climate Controller  Develop a climate controller that can be retrofitted into older automobiles. Older cars have A/C and heat controls, but not climate controllers.  Design a controller that can control, via a touch-screen interface, the a/c, heating systems and the various ventilation flaps in a car.  Use a smart device for control interface (e.g., Ipod touch).  Sponsor: Dr. Zaruba

1 Smart Home Controller  Develop a smart home controller (e.g., for things like the blinds, lights, etc.).  Use the industry standard wireless network (z-wave) defined for this purpose.  System would integrate software and hardware controllers for household devices.  Sponsor: Dr. Zaruba

1 Air Guitar Game System  Develop a system using Kinect/cameras that plays air guitar.  System would use vision processing software to capture “moves” and score players at end of session.  Software allows live viewing, playback and detailed scoring review.  Sponsor: (TBD)

1 Autonomous Paintball Turret  Develop a system that autonomously controls a turret-mounted paintball gun.  Device would integrate and auto-focusing camera and a paint ball gun turret with software to perform auto-tracking of targets.  Sponsor: (TBD)

1 Personal ECG Monitor  Develop a device for monitoring at-risk individuals and making emergency calls when heart attack symptoms are recognized.  Integrate an Electrocardiograph (ECG) and monitoring software to call 911 when heart attack is recognized.  Device should unobtrusive when worn by the individual who is being monitored.  Sponsor: (Heraclea Lab?)

1 3D Environment Mapping System  3D structured environment mapper (Kinect) The goal of this project would be to create an accurate 3D map of an indoor area using the Kinect device.  The device would be mounted on a rotating tripod and placed at various locations throughout the  This map would be very useful for robot navigation or virtual reality type applications.  Sponsor: (McMurrough/Heraclea Lab)

1 Generic Autonomous Vehicle Control Module  Design and develop a sensing and control system for any hobby remote controlled vehicle that uses a standard RC receiver  Control module communicates with vehicle’s actuators/controls using standard (PPM) signal.  Integrate embedded computer, PPM module, actuators, GPS, etc. to control generic vehicle  Potential: a full blown autonomous UGV with obstacle avoidance in a matter of minutes  Sponsor: (Chris McMurrough??)

1 Directional Sound Receiver  Design and develop a system consisting of an array of omni-directional microphones.  Adjust delays in the audio streams from microphones to reinforce sound/suppress noise.  Develop user interface to monitor and control speaker selection.  Potential application: speaker selection in a conference room/meeting  Sponsor: (Umair Sadiq?)
