The Importance of Emergency Medical Service Communication n communicate patient information n provide contact with medical control n control and coordinate scene activity

The Role of Emergency Medical Communications n links caller with dispatch n links dispatch with proper EMS personnel n links field EMS personnel with med. control n links with receiving hospital staff

Functions of the Emergency Medical Dispatcher n takes in-coming calls n alerts and directs appropriate response n keeps track of ongoing communications n gives pre-arrival instructions

The Role of the EMD in an Emergency n an important part of the emergency medical team n the first contact a caller has n initiates emergency system n chose and administer correct pre-arrival instructions

Pre-arrival Instructions n provides immediate assistance while help is on the way n provides updated information to responding personnel n may be life saving in critical incidents n provides emotional support for the caller and victim

Computer Aided Dispatch n allows for faster response times n boosts system productivity n allows for more information to be received in the field

Features of CAD n allows for multi-level response n recommendations for appropriate response unit n gives cross streets from address information n able to look prior history

Time of Response n goal is to have a ten minute scene time n Tx more likely to be successful within the “golden hour” n EMD receives call and dispatches unit n unit arrives on scene, treats, and transports

Why 9-1-1? n Meets public requirements –brief, easily remembered –dialed quickly n unique number –never been used as an area code, office code, or service code

Types of Systems- Standard n capable of connecting caller to dispatch n the opportunity for calling back is limited or not available n possible gives calling phone #

Types of Systems- Enhanced n gives address and phone # of calling party n gives history of prior calls n able to call phone # back
