Review of Action Buttons

Creating Active Learners Using action buttons and action settings, an instructional designer can add interactivity to a learning module: –Navigate to a Website using an action button. –Link to files (documents, spreadsheets). –Link to or embed a video. –Use animation and/or triggered animation to provide: Embedded questions. Provide feedback. Reroute students back through material. Adds interest and functionality.

Navigate to Another Slide You can make action buttons navigate to a particular slide within the current presentation. –Next slide, previous slide, first slide, last slide, particular slide, last slide viewed.

Navigate to a URL You can make action buttons navigate to a particular URL (Web address).

Caution Button navigates to previous slide. Careful: When changing button settings “after-the-fact,” make the button hot, not the text on the button! Caution Text is hot, not the button. Experiment with this button.

Open a Word Document You can make an action button open a Word document or any other data file located on the PC. Open a Word Document

Open Another PowerPoint File If you open another PP presentation, you can specify which slide to open to start. Open another PowerPoint file

Link to a Video Navigate to TeacherTube or YouTube. Find a video, and copy its URL. Create a button, and paste in the URL.

Embed a Video Navigate to TeacherTube or YouTube. Click share and embed a video. Check use old embed code. Select insert—movie embed and paste the embed code.

Play a Sound You can make an action button play a sound. Hear a sound played.

“Mouse over” buttons You can assign an action setting to a button to occur when the student/teacher rolls the mouse over the button. (The button can still have another action setting to occur when the button is pressed.) Roll over this button with mouse

“Mouse over” objects Action settings don’t only apply to buttons. They can be applied to graphics or text boxes, too! Text box mouse over.

Downloading Sounds to Use with Custom Animation 1.Using a search engine, search for sounds (.wav). 2.Custom animate a graphic (or other screen element) as usual. 3.Take the drop-down for the play-listed item, and select “effect options” to add a sound as usual. 4.Instead of selecting a standard sound, select “other sound.” Bonus

Downloading Sounds TRY IT: 1) Insert a graphic. 2) Download a sound to accompany the graphic. 3) Animate the graphic with a sound.

Using Action Buttons to Provide Feedback and Interactivity

Creating invisible action buttons You can create invisible action buttons to create interactivity. –Shape fill: no fill. –Shape outline: no outline. –In PP 2003, you have to select a fill, and then set transparency to 100%. Make this button invisible

Adding Audio Voice Over

Steps in Recording Narration Purchase an audio headphone instead of a hand-held microphone to increase quality.

Steps in Recording Narration Select this tool to begin recording the narration.

Steps in Recording Narration Set microphone level (in Office 2003). Set up and adjust microphone if needed.

Steps in Recording Narration After you hit “OK,” the presentation will run as usual. –Recording begins immediately. Begin speaking. –Advance slides by clicking as usual. –If you are using custom animation, click during narration as usual. Hit ESC to end early, OR record until you hit the end of the presentation.

Steps in Recording Narration PowerPoint will ask if you want to save the slide timings. After recording in PP Before recording in PP 2010.

Hint When Recording Narration HINT: On each slide, pause for 1 second before and after speaking to ensure all of your words are recorded.

Editing Narration 1.Navigate to the slide you want to re- record. 2.Select slideshow—record narration. –Continue recording on subsequent slides. –Press the ESC key to end recording.

Review of Setting Up CBT Navigation

To create CBT navigation… Add Action Buttons 1.On every slide create a next slide and a previous slide button. If you create one set, you can simply copy and paste to other slides. 2.Select appropriate button type: Buttons with arrows. Custom button with typed description.

To create CBT navigation… Turn Off Normal Navigation 3.Place an “end show” button on last slide. –This button will allow the students to exit the educational application. End

To create CBT navigation… Turn Off Normal Navigation 4.From the slide show tab, select set up slide show from the set up group. 5.Select browse at a kiosk (full screen).  Be sure to have buttons for navigation on every slide.  Make sure this is your last step. Audio ends on this slide.
