Recognizing Reading Structure: Main Idea Questions for Paragraph Topics A well-structured paragraph has a clear topic. The material in each paragraph answers a different main-idea question about the topic. What is Main-Idea Questions? They are questions asking about the main ideas.

Example: In the Reading “Global Diet Choices,” the topic of paragraph one is about the meanings of the word diet. The main-idea question could be: What are some definitions of the word diet? What are the different meanings of the word diet?

Recognizing Supporting details: Supporting details can answer a main -idea question. Example: What are some definitions of the word diet? A person’s or a group’s usual food choices and habits. An eating plan with only certain kinds or amounts of food. A plan to lose weight. To lose weight. Main idea question Supporting details

Matching Paragraph Titles With Topics The title of reading material tells the topic. The title should look or sound interesting short For these reasons, readers might not know the meaning of a title – at first.

More about Summarizing: Some other ways to summarize a paragraph: First, say or write the title of the reading material. Then ask a question about the main idea that is answered in the paragraph you are summarizing. Begin your summary with one–sentence general answer to your –main idea question. Write information or ideas to support your main idea in a clear order.

Getting Meaning from Context: Italics & Punctuation Clues New or unusual words or phrases may be in italics. Short definitions – similar words – explanations of the items – examples of their meanings might come between certain kinds of punctuation marks . Different kinds of punctuation marks: quotation marks( “ ”) parentheses( ( )) comma ( ,) dash (–)

Recognizing vocabulary categories: Two ways to learn vocabulary as quickly as possible: Learn several words with the same or similar meanings at the same time. ( universal- worldwide) Learn words in categories. Category= class or group of items in a system of classification. For example: Items: meat/ dairy products/ vegetables/ fruit= kinds of food(category) Items: proteins /carbohydrates/ fats/ vitamins/ minerals= nutrients in food (category)
