Results of a Negative Body Image: Dangerous Dieting Self-Destruction
Think About It… One of the results of having a negative body image was dangerous dieting. We call dangerous dieting, eating disorders. When our sole purpose for eating is about how it impacts our appearance, and not to satisfy hunger or provide nutrition, we may have an eating disorder. Read through the textbook pp about eating disorders.
Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa Intentionally starving themselves to lose weight The person doesn’t get enough calories to carry normal body functions Damages to the heart, brain, and vital organs Bulimia Nervosa When a person eats large amounts of food and tries to get rid of excess calories by inducing vomiting, abusing laxatives, or compulsive exercising This disease is often kept secret and people may be unaware someone has it. A person will maintain their normal body weight making it less detectable on the surface Damages esophagus and stomach, and stomach acids will wear away tooth enamel
Compulsive Over-Eating Same as bulimia without the purging (vomiting) Stop eating only when the body is in physical pain Many are overweight or obese Damages to the person’s body include: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes
Warning Signs of Eating Disorders Constantly obsessing over size and shape of body Constantly thinking about weight and repeatedly weighing oneself Eating only certain foods in specific limited amounts Wanting to eat alone and feeling uncomfortable eating with others Feeling that they should exercise more no matter how much they already exercise A person never feels good about themselves unless they’re thin, but never satisfied with how thin they are Taking diet pills, abusing laxatives
