Enviro-Feed Case Study Engineering Economics 540:343 Rutgers University Natasha Rogers - Group Leader Everett Brace Abbey Lessanu Joey Liu Daniel Stala

Project Objective Our group established a case study weighing the advantages and disadvantages of recycling food residuals with the use of Enviro-Feed Inc.’s technique and how it applied to the East Brunswick Hilton.

PROJECT OVERVIEW Green Engineering - Our ethical obligation to the Environment Food Residuals - Various Techniques on reduction Enviro-Feed -What is their purpose East Brunswick Hilton -What they had to say Present Cost Study Breakeven Analysis Advantages and Disadvantages

What is Green Engineering?

Balance Environmental and Economic Issues to Create Sustained Development

How to dispose of food waste?

Food Waste Disposal Composting Compacting Food banks

Enviro-feed Inc. Located State Street, Perth Amboy, NJ Founded in July 1999 Michael DiNardi, CEO 12 Employees Enviro-pak

What is Enviro-feed? The Best Alternative for Waste Management Residual human food scraps Enviro-feed collects, mixes and processes waste Produces tan, low moisture pellet feed

How does it work? Provide free estimates and free pilot program Training on food separation into containers Collection every two-three days Two Inspections Waste is moved into hammer mill converted into a slurry Process into Pellets

Enviro-Feed’s Clientele Food-a-Rama ShopRite PathMark Foodtown The Manor Restaurant Merck & Co. Hospitals Hilton Hotels

East Brunswick Hilton Located: 3 Tower Center Boulevard, East Brunswick, NJ 50 bins collected 3 times a week 70% of waste goes to Envirofeed

Breakeven Analysis Alternative A (Compactor) Alternative B (Enviro-Feed) Capital Recovery for Alternative A = $11,000 with a salvage value of $0 at the end of five years. Compactor is pulled six times per month where the cost for each pull is $180. The disposal fee for each ton is $67. In Alternative B, the storage bins are free, therefore capital recovery is $0. 50 bins are emptied 4 times a week. The disposal fee for each ton is $55. Find the number of tons per year so that the annual worth for each alternative is equal. Assume a MARR= 15%

Breakeven Analysis -$11,000(A/P, 15%,5)-$67X=-$55X X=237tons/year

Present Economy Study Option A(Compactor) Disposal: 56 tons/month x $67/ton= $3752 Pull: $180/pull x 6 pulls/month=$1080 Total Cost: $4832/month Option B (Enviro-feed) Disposal: $0 (No Disposal) Pull: 16 pulls/month (3-4 pulls/week) 56 tons/month x $70/ton= $3920 Total Cost: $3920 Savings = $912/month

AdvantagesDisadvantages Cheaper No Dumpster – Conservation of space – Reduction in odor Increase in sanitation Consistent Quality Environmentally Sound No Heavy Lifting Time Consuming Separation New training Tedious food separation

Reflections... Green Engineering Code of Ethics Economic Benefits in addition to Environmental Responsibility …snoitcelfeR
