Salsa Por Sra. Barham

Origins Most people credit Cuba with inventing the “salsa” dance; however, it is a mixture of dances from various countries including England, France, Spain, Africa, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The name “salsa” originated in New York. (centralhome)

(salsa-dance-professional) Famous Salsa Dancers Eddie Torres—born in Harlem in 1950 and is one of the world’s most famous salsa instructors. Torres is often called “The Mambo King.” Frankie Martinez—born in New York and trained by Eddie Torres. Martinez is the founder of the ABAKUA African-Latin Dance Company. Johnny Vazquez—born in Mexico he is considered “the greatest LA style dancer today.” (salsa-dance-professional)

(salsa-dance-professional) More Famous Dancers Seaon Bristol—a Los Angeles dancer. Seaon is said to be the best male follower. Leon Rose—born in London and is said to be the best salsa dancer in the United Kingdom. (salsa-dance-professional)

Popular Salsa Styles New York Style—adheres to the “On 2” rhythm. Dancers occupy little space on the floor and often have solo performances.

Salsa Styles LA Style—follows “On One” rhythm. This style is more flashy than the New York Style and has been greatly influenced by the swing and mambo dances.

(salsa-dance-professional) Salsa Styles Cuban Style—often the follower mirrors the steps of the leader. Also, the dancers tend to circle around each other. (salsa-dance-professional)

Salsa Styles Reuda de Casino—similar to square dancing where a leader calls out the dance movements and couples may switch partners. You must have at least two couples and often couples challenge each other.

(salsa-dance-professional) Salsa Styles Zumba—combines latin american dance and aerobic exercise. Zumba originated in 1999 when aerobic instructor Beto Perez forgot his exercise music and used the salsa music he had in his car instead. It is quickly becoming an international sensation.
