H ISTORY OF S MOKING Smoking tobacco has been going on since 5000 BC in Mesoamerica. However, in the 16th century, tobacco has been a part of people's culture and society. People used to smoke thinking it had medical purposes or because they were already accustomed to other drugs that are smoked. Tobacco and its spread was also encouraged by religious leaders. Regardless of how it spread, it is addictive and claims millions every year.

E FFECT ON H EALTH Nicotine alters brain to the point where you are completely addicted to it; even if you want to quit, sometimes it is impossible to do so because nicotine-addicted body cannot be stable without nicotine. People, especially kids, who are exposed to these deadly toxins through the air, have a 25% higher risk of heart disease. In 2005, 3,000 non-smoking adults died from lung cancer; 46,000 died from coronary disease and 430 newborns died as a result of sudden infant death syndrome- all because they were exposed to secondhand smoke.
