Historical Facts Defeated in World War I, Austria once a very powerful empire was minimized. They remained this way for a decade under annexation by Nazi Germany and victorious Allies. Austria was given independence in 1955, to which the treaty denounced unification with Germany and ended the occupation. That same year to have the Soviet military withdraw from Austria, a constitutional law declared this country perpetual neutrality. Altering this neutrality happened in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union and in 1995 its entry into the European Union. In 1999 Austria became the EU Economic Monetary Union and was a prosperous and Democratic country.

Highlights  Great highlights in Austria are the slops! Really nice ski resorts are all over: in Kaprun, Kuhtai, and Hintertux where the temperatures are low and is keeping the snow in good shape. In the Arlberg resorts of Lech, Zurs, and St Anton the low temperatures have helped preserve the snow cover.

Culture and People Austria celebrates four weeks prior to Christmas, calling it the Advent Season. This tradition starts four Sundays prior to Christmas with four candles and an advent wreath. Thereafter, an additional candle is lit on Sundays Marking the advent of Christmas. There is generally Caroling, story reading, singing, drinking tea’s and baking cookies. Consequently, advent is a season of fast for religious purposes. There is also a calendar that has twenty-four windows that one can open leading up to Christmas day or bags opened each day that contains presents or chocolate. Children get to leave wish lists by the window for “Christkindl” comes to get and leaves presents.

Culture and People The Advent month before Christmas in the streets.

Austria would be a good place for you if you like the cooler weather and where you can ski, snowboard, and do all the winter fun stuff! If you’re big on Christmas then come to Austria they are big on celebrating Christmas.
