Australia is a country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth- largest country by total area. Neighboring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.

The majority of Australia experiences temperate weather for most of the year. The northern states of Australia are typically warm all the time, with the southern states experiencing cool winters but rarely sub-zero temperatures. Snow falls on the higher mountains during the winter months, enabling skiing in southern New South Wales and Victorian ski resorts, as well as the smaller resorts in Australia's island state, Tasmania.

Although most of Australia is semi-arid or desert, it includes a diverse range of habitats from alpine heaths to tropical rainforests, and is recognised as a megadiverse country. Australian forests are mostly made up of evergreen species, particularly eucalyptus trees in the less arid regions, wattles replace them in drier regions and deserts as the most dominant species.

Among well-known Australian animals are the monotremes; kangaroo, koala, wombat, and birds such as the emu and the kookaburra. Australia is home to many dangerous animals including some of the most poisonous snakes in the world.

Steve Irwin, TV Actor, Australian naturalist who was unafraid of dangerous animals. Heath Ledger — Movie Actor, Joker of 'The Dark Knight' died tragically of a drug overdose Hugh Jackman — Australian Movie Actor known for playing Wolverine in the X-Men movies, and for his amazing performance in Les Miserables in 2012.

Apparently the first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per person than any other community in the history of mankind. In 1954 Bob Hawke made it into the Guinness Record Book: he sculled 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds. Bob Hawke went on to become the Prime Minister of Australia. The average person in Australia swallows three spiders a year. The Tasmanian Devil does exist, and it has the jaw strength of a crocodile. There are more than 150 million sheep in Australia, and only some 20 million people. Tasmania has the cleanest air in the world The Sydney Opera House roof weighs more than 161,000 tons. Yulara, the Aboriginal name of the Ayers Rock Resort, means "crying", "weeping". Nasty tongues say because that's what visitors do when they see their bill...
