Australia is a country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth- largest country by total area. Among well-known Australian animals are the monotremes; kangaroo, koala, wombat, and birds such as the emu and the kookaburra. Australia is home to many dangerous animals including some of the most poisonous snakes in the world.
