Eclipse HX E-MADI 64 card

What is MADI? MADI connection STAGE BOX MADI stands for Multi-channel Audio Digital Interface. It is a 32, 56 or 64 channel, synchronous AES3 digital audio pipe running over Fiber or Co-axial cable between compatible devices. Also known as AES10. It is used in the Audio and Video Broadcasting, Live Performance and Recording industries. MADI connection STAGE BOX

What is MADI? Cont. STUDIO OR OB VAN THEATRE AUDIO NETWORK Audio routers (or console) can route audio from any port on the audio network to and from the intercom matrix via the E-MADI connection. The E-MADI card in the matrix appears as 64 virtual direct audio ports MADI ports can used in the same manner as 4-wire direct ports. IFB sources/destinations, members of PartyLines etc. STUDIO OR OB VAN THEATRE AUDIO NETWORK AUDIO ROUTER MADI connection

E-MADI Eclipse HX Card The 6RU card set (front and rear) is called E-MADI64 It has up to 64 duplex channels Sample frequencies 44.1, 48 and 96kHz Channel qty 32, 56 and 64 (HX can limit channels/ports) VOX for all 64 ch inputs Fiber (MM) SFP Duplex LC removable transceiver module as standard Fiber (SM) SFP Duplex LC removable transceiver module as an option BNC MADI in and BNC MADI out BNC - Word clock input, derived from NTSC/PAL and Tri Level HD or AES word clock Centrally upgradeable using HX

E-MADI Eclipse HX Card Operating Distances Multi-mode Fiber up to 2km (default transceiver @ 125MBps) Single-mode Fiber up to 15km 75 ohm Coaxial Cable up to 50m for both MADI streams and World clock sync input Sample rate / Channel Qty Options 32 Channels – 44.1KHz, 48KHz and 96KHz. 56 Channels – 44.1KHz and 48KHz. 64 Channels – 44.1KHz and 48KHz. EHX (& ECS) can limit MADI ports to 16, 32, 56 and 64 ports

MADI Audio The E-MADI card routes up to 64 channels of audio via the MADI interface. Each audio channel is 24 bits in length. The MADI card provides an input and output gain for each MADI channel which is configurable in HX and PM Pro For each channel the input and output gain can be configured to be between -72dB to +18dB. Each channel has inbuilt VOX and noise gate circuitry, similar to MVX

MADI Channel Labelling Each MADI input channel will provide its 4-character channel ID via the provided embedded data bits. (this is displayed on the panel key or sent to/from the 3rd party madi unit) Each MADI output channel’s ID can be re-labeled by the Eclipse HX configuration or through PM Pro alias labels. This means that Eclipse HX Panels can automatically show the MADI channel ID or Alias as supplied from Production Maestro Pro. HX label choices are Use Remote 3rd party ID (4-character) Use Production Maestro Pro Alias instead Disable ID – use HX port name.

HX MADI Set-Up The correct frame position for the MADI cards in the frame is directly after the MVX cards, and before the E-Que, IVC-32, LMC-64 and E-FIB fibre cards. As many E-Madi cards can be fitted into a matrix as you need as long you do not exceed the matrix port count Use HX auto-discovery or manually set the card slot All MADI channels have standard HX settings, including VOX and in-use tally Card Properties are only used when not using word clock and allows sample rate selection when syncing to video signals. Apply the changes to the frame(s) with a reset.

HX Cards and Ports Note Channel port quantity selection.

Video / Word Clock sync input When using the Word Clock Source Sync input: Connect the clock source input WRD LED on the front of the E-MADI card will light solid green to indicate it has detected the word clock The E-MADI card will display the number of ports configured, and detected receive sample rate (as provided by word clock) with flashing green LEDS 1:1 at 0.5Hz The E-MADI card front Red Error light will remain lit solidly until MADI source audio is detected. Note each E-Madi card must be feed it’s own word clock sync input signal MADI Fiber MADI input Coax MADI output Coax Video/Word clock input Coax

Video / World Clock sync input Suggest using a world clock distribution unit like the : Apogee – “Big Ben” product (1 in / 6 out) If using a Video Source Sync input: Connect the clock source input VID LED on the front of the E-MADI card will light solid green to indicate it has detected the video clock The MADI card will display the number of ports and sample rates configured in HX, with flashing green LEDS 1:1 at 0.5Hz The E-MADI card front Red Error light will remain lit solidly until MADI audio is detected.

MADI Audio Connection Connect the external MADI Audio (using Coax or Fiber) Connect the external MADI Audio to the rear of the E-MADI card. The E-MADI card will display the number of ports configured and detected sample rate (provided by word clock*) with a solid green LED on the front of the E-MADI card if they match the received source. The Red Error light will turn off on the front of the E-MADI card when the MADI source is detected. Audio passes in and out of the E-MADI card to the Eclipse HX backplane *If using a video signal then the HX sample rate is displayed.

E-MADI Diagnostics On an active E-MADI card with no connections: Power LEDs will illuminate solid green Active LED will flash green 1:1 at 0.5Hz Red Error LED will illuminate solid. On an active E-MADI card with MADI connections and clock source: The Red Error light will turn off on the front of the E-MADI card when the MADI source is detected. Sample rate LEDs on the front of the E-MADI card will flash between 2 types of sample rates when the received sample rate differs from the transmit sample rate. Channel LEDs on the front of the E-MADI card will flash between 2 types of port numbers when the number of received channels differs from the channel number set by HX.

E-MADI Diagnostics BOOT sequence Active and Error LEDs will flash rapidly until completed. If there are any POST messages these LEDs will not flash at 0.5Hz 1:1 and will indicate error codes – see card manual for details. Event Log records channel and sample rate settings for each E-MADI64 card. Firmware report is provided on the Project or Layout screen. As part of the firmware report

MADI Card upgrade E-MADI cards are centrally (HX) or locally upgradeable. Go to the Layout screen and right mouse click on the Matrix and select update firmware / card update. Follow instructions. The FPGA, CPU App and DSP code can be centrally upgraded but not the CPU Boot code. The HX sends code rapidly to the CPU but it can take up to 18 minutes to load the FPGA on the E-MADI card from the CPU, (DSP takes just 3 min and CPU app 1 min). During this upgrade time the E-MADI will continue to transmit MADI but not receive MADI. * Do not make any map downloads during this time The Event Logs report start and finish update and firmware versions. The Xilinx PROM holds a golden image of the FPGA and an image that is upgradable. Therefore as the CPU boot code can not be modified, if the upgrade is inadvertently terminated the card is always recoverable via HX. Xilinx local update through an attached PC and correct cable is faster.

Compatibility with 3rd Party Equipment The Clear-Com E-MADI card has been shown to work with products from the following manufacturers: 3rd party equipment notes Optocore Optocore does not work correctly with 96kHz sample rates Studer Nexus RME DiGiCo * Set DiGiCo to standard mode No support for DiGiCo chnl 57 Avid (Digi design) Lawo

Hands On Practice Session The purpose of this session is to gain familiarity with E-MADI by configuring a card to provide some of the more common functions. We can loop the MADI back into the Frame so we can test what we have set up. Install the Physical Card into the Eclipse HX Frame Set up the Card to Run at 48kHz, with 64 channels in HX Connect the Word Clock Device to the Card using Coax Cable Connect the Fibre MADI port to itself using a loopback Fibre Cable Set up the first 4 MADI ports in HX to operate with: Port 1. Global IFB with -15dB cut Port 2. Global Latch Disable Port 3. Audio Presence Tally Enabled Port 4. Labels set to PM and HCI Program a panel to have talk and listen keys to the 4 ports you have set up Download, Apply and Test your MADI ports
