Epic Hero Review

Intro to hero The main character is a hero, who is often possessed of supernatural abilities or qualities. The main character is charged with a quest-the call The hero is tested, often to prove the worthiness of himself and his quest. (threshold)

The presence of numerous mythical beings, magical and helpful animals, and human helpers and companions (mentor/helpers) The hero’s travels take him to a supernatural world, often one that normal human beings are barred from entering. (trials/tests) The cycle must reach a low point where the hero nearly gives up his quest or appears defeated. (The abyss)

Where does the dragon come from. Why does he attack the Geats Where does the dragon come from? Why does he attack the Geats? Is the dragon a greater or lesser threat than Grendel? Why does Beowulf go to fight him? Why do Beowulf’s men desert him when he is fighting the dragon?  Why does Wiglaf decide to stay and help him?

3. What do Beowulf’s battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon have in common? What does this suggest about what these monsters might represent for the Anglo-Saxon culture? 4. The epic closes on a somber note, one of mourning. What words or images contribute to this tone?
