 Beowulf’s King, Higlac, sent Beowulf to help Hrothgar.  Beowulf is able to defeat Grendel without weapons.  Beowulf makes Herot Hall safe again.  When he fights the dragon, Beowulf needs help from his loyal follower Wiglaf.

 Poets during Anglo times were called “scops.”  Anglo-Saxon life was very difficult. It was stern and barbaric  Beowulf displayed “commitatus” or undying loyalty to King Higlac.  Generally, epic poems do not rhyme.  A kenning combines two words to create a metaphor.
