Employers come to job fairs to MEET job seekers, to get a feel for candidates, not necessarily to hire. So, the job seeker's goal should be to network or build a bridge to employment. Attend this seminar to learn how to help job seekers "make conversation" about themselves or to gain a presentation you can individualize and reuse! Employers at job fairs, hiring events Despite online applications, other processes Even tho time = money, not at workplace Paid a booth fee too Why? Reports from 3 mines US Steel only accepts resumes online but comes to job fairs & told us why: Promote job openings Meet & get to know applicants Connect a face to a name (HR remembers names on apps surprisingly well) Help skilled people succeed in the process (resume tips) Market jobs to qualified job seekers Magnetation still looking for the BIG fish “Hardworking” on website “Hardworking” in Sean’s head He came to train WFC staff ArcelorMittal Remembers names, online apps, knows if applied more than once! Despite the fact that mining companies historically receive 1,000+ applications per hourly opening

Fear __________________ Quote from Mahatma Gandhi: Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny. What thoughts are in the way? Fear of success AND Threat of failure Sort it out 1 minute silence Charlotte’s story “Overbearing” Learning from Dena, an introvert Introvert Customer in 4 year college program Mining Industry Day 1st year, 800 people so didn’t go 2nd year, came, well dressed w resume, talked to Dena 3rd year, came, well dressed (trimmed beard), resumes, talked to Dena & talked to 4 employers He built bridges Employers had visited the college Most of us have less than 4 years to learn this

Customer Wanted interview help Wore one of these to meet with me Asked my advice . . . . Justified wrist band - $ for cancer research Give yourself credit for preparations: Clothes Business casual or better: button shirt, tucked in, belt, overall clean & well groomed Appearance No jeans with holes, hoodies, tennis shoes, hats, no “message” clothes (sample in photo) Preparations Websites, job listings, resumes, practice, networking

Thinking by Walter Wintle If you think you are beaten, you are, If you think you dare not, you don’t. If you like to win, but you think you can’t, It is almost certain you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost, For out in the world we find, Success begins with a fellow’s will. It’s all in the state of mind. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man. But soon or late the man who wins, Is the man who thinks he can.” (written in late 19th or early 20th century) So what do employers want, why is it worth it to them to go to Job Fairs? Marketing In part Marketing jobs more so Hire “hardworking” 1st impressions – impact, memorable Face to face with job seekers “Fishing” Streamline process Difficulties with Online Interviews, meet once Assessments, references Hiring $1 million decision Firing is awful Employers expectations of YOU (not ask what the business does) Prepared Researched Introduction “Make conversation”

Redefine Success BEST you can hope to for today? Get HIRED! More likely? Line up an interview Get a business card Name recognition Bridge the distance Be remembered How? Make conversation about work skills! May take months to get hired - redefine success at JOB FAIR Do Result Success Preparation Feel confident Shake hands Look at eyes Appear intelligent Make conversation Listen Hear Give back Think Appropriate words Dialogue continues No job now Could change Bridge to work Talk Describe past work Better understand skills 75-80% of jobs filled thru networking! Employers often revisit application or resume at office Start the conversation with words from the job ad cultural “FIT”

This is an actual job as listed in www.MinnesotaWorks.net in 2014 US Steel Critiques resumes at job fairs Expects to hear how skills that match job so use the words in the ad, KISS! What words would YOU use from this job ad? Job title Miner? Haul truck driver? Utility Person! Soon – today, we’ll do the following – aloud! 30 second elevator speech Choose A company A job A work story

Words I see Bold above Applicant could Use same words to “fit” psychologically or match in a computer resume to create objective, tagline, brand the HIRE-ME “package” US Steel Reviews resumes at job fairs Often do not meet threshold requirement- “1 year of manufacturing/industrial experience” Define ONE year or more clearly Describe duties in detail Worked at L & M Radiator doesn’t mean duties were MANUFACTURING/INDUSTRIAL I wouldn’t be there, maybe the office!

Just DO it! Start State your message, include job title Build Applied online Heard . . . word of mouth Name drop Tie in words from company (vision, mission, etc.) Conversation Use KEYwords from job ads = “fit” Describe a past work experience Created 5 minute Specific story No one sleeps Explain how you work Used silence What coworkers say Ask Something you’d like to find out Something that shows you researched 1 minute silence STAR (or SHARE) to build out a work story Situation Task Action Result Like resume, convince with Attitude Numbers Stories This afternoon’s class!
