The PORTfolio Program at Virginia Wesleyan College offers students the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the traditional classroom setting. This unique program begins freshman year with “self and circumstance,” which helps students discover their “skills and talents, as well as the needs of the community, and engage in service-learning projects.” The objective of PORTfolio is to offer a course in which students have an abundance of opportunities for “experiential learning early in their college career rather than later.” What is PORTfolio??

Service Learning! Service Learning is a form of experiential education that engages students in community service as part of an academic project or course and that helps them relate their service experience to the project or course content.

Internships: Expands awareness of the world beyond the classroom Explore career ideas in professional settings Experience the connection between their liberal arts education and the world through its application at a work site Gain valuable career-related experience Network with future employers. Externships: Expand awareness of the world beyond the classroom Discover first hand the skills and kinds of judgment needed for future success Draw connections between what is learned in the classroom and in a work setting Plan a four-year academic experience accordingly Network with future employers

Should PORTfolio advertise more? Yes! Many people are unaware of the PORTfolio program, or simply do not know what it is. However, graduating PORTfolio students are now recognized with special PORT cords. Throw an event with the school Get connected with SGA or WAC Use T-Shirts to advertise Make flyers and posters to promote upcoming events
