What is it? How does it work?

  We are exploring education and teaching. Today you will explore two different concepts: Andragogy and Pedagogy.  Define: Andragogy  Define: Pedagogy Read and Review (10 minutes)  Read and Review The Role of Experiential Education in Pedagogy and Andragogy  Highlight and identify key concepts/take-away from the article.  Capture the key concepts on a piece of notebook paper of both Andragogy and Pedagogy Assignment

  Compare and contrast pedagogy and andragogy  Think, Pair, Share Pedagogy vs. Andragogy

 Andragogy vs. Pedagogy

  Experiential education is a philosophy of education that describes the process that occurs between a teacher and student that infuses direct experience with the learning environment and content.  Hands-on experience  Andragogy is the method and practice of teaching adult learners; adult education  Pedagogy is the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept  education of children Vocabulary

  Adults need to know why they need to know something before they are taught it  The Self-Concept of adults is heavily dependent upon a move towards self direction  Prior experiences provide a rich resource for learning  Adults typically become ready to learn when they experience a need to cope with a life situation or perform a task  Adult’s orientation to learning is life-centered, and they see education as a process of developing increased competency levels to achieve their full potential  The motivation for adult learners is internal and not external  Responsible for Learning Andragogy

  Little to no experience to pull from  Conform to have common view, to teach about as opposed to living out  Isolation of sensory stimulation in learning  Large, singular groups; students responsible for singular success  I do (teacher), We do (class), You do (student) instruction; teacher focused  Little expansion of topics outside of specific subject  Learn though examples/thoughts of others  Unable to assess to one’s own standard Pedagogy

 The Changing Face of Education What’s changing? Why?
