Writing a Cover Letter Lesson Objectives 1. Identify the purpose of writing a cover letter. 2. List the parts of an effective cover letter. 3. Describe qualifications and accomplishments in an effective cover letter format.

What is a Cover Letter? A letter that introduces an applicant and the applicant’s résumé to a potential employer  Explains why the applicant would be a good match for the potential employer

Importance of a Cover Letter  Demonstrates professionalism and initiative  Expands main points from résumé  Goes in-depth about experience and skills  Shows employer a glimpse of the applicant’s personality  Opportunity to show company and industry knowledge  Provides a sample of written communication skills

Ultimate Goal The main purpose of writing a cover letter is to get a job interview!

Addressing Your Cover Letter  Address letter to a specific individual  Increases the chance it will be reviewed by the company  If no name is provided:  Call the company to ask for more information  Visit the human resources office  Avoid “To Whom It May Concern”

Introduction Salutation  “Dear Sara:” Too informal  “Dear Mr./Ms. _______:”  If unsure of the person’s gender, use full name  “Dear Pat Jones:”

The Opening Paragraph  Introduces self and states purpose for writing  Explains how you know the employer  Name drop if applicable  Explains why you are interested in the company  States the type of job you are seeking

The Argument  Considered the “Sales Pitch”  Focuses on the applicant’s qualifications for the job  Highlights 2-4 accomplishments that match the company’s needs  Write in paragraph form, bullet points, or as a T-letter
